HackNet Review from an IT Perspective

Here I'll review the video game HackNet, where you play a hacker on a Linux system and which takes place on the Internet of 1990s. I'll compare its fantasy hacking to the real life hacks that inform it and consider its educational value.

This game is one of very few that I felt like actually 100%ing on Steam. I may be biased, being a cybersecurity student, but honestly, this is just an absolute gem of a game, even without the Labyrinth DLC, which I also love

Yea. Buffer overflow very much still effects programs. There was a very recent CVE on BO. There are over 14,000 CVEs on BO. And I'm sure not not disclosed

By the way, you can acquire the source code of the encoder and decoder of the .dec files. It's in C#, and a single for loop - and if you read it you'll see what a sorry mistake of a encryption program it is. Even one of their employees points it out.

It would be an impressive feat to complete the whole game with no x-server file (although I believe some things require the GUI - maybe that requirement can be modded out). It'd be neat if Naix tried to remove your x-server file and found that you had none. I like to imagine his surprise.

I can think of two things - JMail/KaguyaMail interactions and Shells. Shells can be controlled via ComShell.exe but that's locked behind one of Kaguya's missions. Reading JMail in the console is possible if you go through the pain of hacking it every time, but afaik replaying is impossible. Specific quests, especially the "final" quests (JuneBug, Bit, PacificAir) require the GUI too, for very good reasons. It would be interesting to mod in though.

There's also a nice DLC, in HackNet: Labyrinths, which has a slightly similar sobering end-mission like the pacemaker mission. No spoilers for those who have yet to play it though. The soundtrack for both the main game and the DLC is SUPERB. Carpenter Brut's Roller Mobster for the end mission is just *MUAH*. There's also a SIMILAR (but still pretty different. More UI than Command Prompt) game called Uplink, by the wonderful folk over at Introversion Software (Darwinia, DEFCON, and the more recent Prison Architect) that is also enjoyable.

I don't think it's inappropriate jokes that keep educators from using it. I think the whole idea of "hacking", as in what might be called "black or grey hat hacking" would stop any teacher who isn't specifically teaching a computer security course. Just the very name "Hacknet" would stop most teachers! This seems a flimsy argument, based on your personal level of discomfort. And making it a Key Moment? Please. Get real. Otherwise a fine video!

This game would be appropriate for a college level class, such as an Ethical Hacking or Cyber/Infosec course.

@@HarryPotter-lh8ii Yes, I used to teach a Linux and a cybersecurity course for college and ended up getting a new job for a K-12 teacher so there are a mix of ages I teach. For some of them, they know nothing about programming, they are staring out with Scratch and such. I was looking into seeing if I can introduce hacknet to my curriculum for the middle schoolers. Since it is a private school, I have some leeway with what I could get away with as long as it's approved by the board. The soundtrack was also another reason why I was wanting to go with hacknet too, darksynth is my favorite music genre.
