This performance was recorded on March 2, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
June 1, 2020 | Stephen Thompson -- You can probably guess that we recorded the original Broadway cast of Hadestown before the coronavirus pandemic made live theater (live anything) an untenable risk. The reminders are everywhere - in the way 16 performers bunch up behind the desk, singing formidably in close proximity as a large crowd gathers just off camera - that this took place in the Before-Times. To be specific, on March 2.
We'd actually been trying to put this show together since the spring of 2019, when Hadestown was a freshly Tony-nominated hit musical. We hit several delays along the way due to scheduling issues, only to end up rushing in an attempt to record while playwright Anaïs Mitchell - who wrote both the musical and the 2010 folk opera on which it's based - was eight months pregnant.
Thankfully, we captured something truly glorious - a five-song distillation of a robust and impeccably staged Broadway production. A raucous full-cast tone-setter, "Way Down Hadestown" lets Hermes (André De Shields, in a role that won him a Tony) and Persephone (Kimberly Marable, filling in for Amber Gray) set the scene before a medley of "Come Home With Me" and "Wedding Song" finds Orpheus (Reeve Carney) and Eurydice (Eva Noblezada) meeting and falling in love. "When the Chips Are Down" showcases the three Fates - spirits who often drive the characters' motivations - as played by Jewelle Blackman, Yvette Gonzalez-Nacer and Kay Trinidad. And in "Flowers," Eurydice looks back with regret and resignation on her decision to leave Orpheus for the promise of Hadestown.
Finally, the set concludes with "Why We Build the Wall," which quickly became Hadestown's most talked-about number. (Mitchell wrote it a full decade before the 2016 election, but you'd never know it.) Though the song includes the full cast, it's also a show-stopping showcase for the sonorous thunder of Patrick Page, who performs with a gravity befitting the king of the underworld.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Thats Reeve. I went to the stage door after watching the show and everyone was so chill and professional and then we saw Reeve and there was so much awkward energy as if it was his first show. Either thats some serious methood acting or Reeeve is the most awkward person I've met. (For refrence this was Febuary 2020, so far from his first show) Probably why he was cast for orpheus.

Anaïs is a lyrical genius. One example that I can't get over is the line "all the rivers will sing along, and they're gonna break their banks for us, and with their gold be generous" like there's both river banks and banks are what keeps money and gold really can be found in rivers, so it all works so well, and it makes me so happy c:

@@Lmpeak why that?
@Lmpeak
@Lmpeak 4 жыл бұрын
@@GuiHppn I didn't know if it was situational, or a consistent thing. The Gods of the "overworld" in Greek mythology never really liked Hades due to his attitude and behavior. Hermes is a more neutral god, and thus tolerates Hades more than most (while still being cautious of him). For me, I didn't know if it was in the character to turn away for his appearance or if was just happenstance.

Things I love about this: - The whole cast being style icons - Everyone dancing around and Reeve's just awkwardly standing there and clapping - Kimberley's facial expressions - Anaïs standing over in the corner being really pregnant and still playing the guitar and singing amazingly - Andre having a really fun time with his little train whistle thing and tooting it whenever someone gets applause - Eva just jamming really hard - Kay aggressively playing the tambourine - 4:02 *british accent* - "A singerrrr" - All the musicians just going for ittttt - Anaïs being like "nooo I wrote it in 2006 this isn't about trump" - Everyone singing Why We Build the Wall but Orpheus would never so Reeve's just standing there awkwardly again -Whoever does that noise at 24:58

My husband and I have been following Mitchell since her concept album in 2010. It was the only CD I would listen to in my car for two straight years. The concept version of "Wedding Song" was our wedding song--impromptu cheesy dance choreography included. Listening now to this heartfelt and haunting music and seeing how it has transformed into a full-fledged musical on Broadway gives me so much joy and anticipation of where it will go next--and where I and my family will grow as well. I'm pregnant and sitting here holding my belly and crying a little bit thinking about how I want to share my love of music and storytelling with my little one and how this musical and Anaïs Mitchell's songs and spirit will be a part of growing up and growing together. Thanks for this Tiny Desk Concert and thanks for all of this incredible love and devotion to creating beautiful art and story.

I only discovered the original concept album after I learned about the musical. I can only imagine how cool it is to be so connected to a project like this, and to watch it become what Hadestown has. I've seen a few musicians do projects like this with the explicit intent to turn them into staged shows, but they rarely ever get put on, let alone given the full Broadway treatment. It must've been really exciting to hear that an album that meant so much to you was made into a Broadway show like this (but in hindsight, it's not surprising, considering how GOOD it is).

According to Anaïs (I hope I spelled that right), most female parts written by men are very difficult to sing, but she had the opposite problem; she wrote the female parts knowing they weren't too outlandish and then got to the men's parts and was like "yeah, that should be fine". Patrick Page even commented "It's interesting because you composed on guitar where most compose on piano. On piano you can visually see 'no no, these notes are too way over there, that would never work'". I probably butchered what both of them said, but the quotes are from the "Talks at Google" interview.

With everything going on in the world, this was especially powerful to watch. The cast, orchestra and crew are so diverse- not just because they have to be, but because every single person working on this show is extremely talented at what they do and they worked hard to be there. People of color aren't in media less than white people because they are less talented. They aren't given the opportunities and recognition that they deserve. And yet- this musical is so unique because of the blend between all of the beautiful voices and styles that Anaïs Mitchell pulled together. This music of this show draws form southern blues, folk, and jazz- a genre that black people just straight up invented and white people basically just took from them. As a white person, I will never feel guilty for being white- a race that throughout history oppressed others, but I will never take for granted my privilege, nor the art that black folks and people of colour in general have brought into the world. Things like Hades Town are the reason I stand with Black Lives Matter.

So Anais really worked it into an actual Musical, and it is actually famous? I love the original recording and listened through it dozens of times. This is an amazing rendition, got goosebumps all the way through! I guess there is finally a musical I'll go to, should they ever play near my town.

There have been two recordings of the musical; a proper live version that's got such a great energy to it, and the OCBR that includes new lyrics and all of the songs that were missing from the live recording.

I just noticed at 7:18 when Orpheus says "I also play the lyre", Reeve kinda looks back at the guitar since he isn't actually holding one xD I love this musical
