Almost ironic - Eurydice knows all of this and yet she still trusted Hades and the Fates? She never suspected that they might let her down? Another lesson learned here - being able to see the world the way it is doesn't stop you from getting hurt.
@aliciad1794 жыл бұрын
My theory is that while you can interpret the Fates as literally the Fates from Greek mythology (obviously), they can also be interpreted as a theatrical device for showing a character's inner doubts and thoughts. Hence why they follow around the cynical Eurydice, why they're the ones to convince her to go to the Underworld (it's her inner doubts coming to the forefront), why they don't sing to Orpheus as much until he's questioning himself, why Orpheus echoes their words exactly aloud in Doubts Come In (because the doubts are going from the back of his mind and into all he can think), and why they speak directly to the audience after Gone, I'm Gone (because they're voicing what the audience may be thinking: I can judge what she's done, but if it truly were me who were starving... would I hold onto my morals so easily?). Of course, this is just my personal interpretation.
@fabulousmyriad2674 жыл бұрын
I interpreted it as a world weary Eurydice who distrusts humans but trusts in the "otherworldly" because they different like her

She was starving and exhausted... I think The Fates lay it out very well in the song "Gone, I'm Gone". I think she was desperate. We don't always think clearly when we are desperate.

The addition to this song gives Eurydice so many layers to her character and why she is the way she is- call it her soliloquy, if you must. We even get some foreshadowing of her choices later on, right from the get-go! Originally a damsel in distress from the myth, to a dynamic character in Hadestown ❤️ And it’s great to hear more of Orpheus’s backstory as a muses’s son who fell under Hermes’s wing too!

Eurydice: People *turn on you* just like the wind. Hermes, about Muses: Sometimes they *abandon* you. Parallels exactly what Orpheus and Eurydice end up doing to each other.

Anyone notice when Hermes is singing at the end of the song (“and he had a way with words..”) that piano melody playing is the same one that plays at the end of the musical when Eurydice is taken back down to hadestown. Damn this song already foreshadowed so much in the lyrics but had to pop off in the music too.

I saw the original cast the week after it won the Tony for best musical. I had come to NYC (where I am from) from Europe (where I have lived for years) and and I knew nothing about the show beyond the myth itself. I had never heard the music before (I am a musician). This is the second song in the show. When the fates open their mouths the first time and sang in harmony I burst into tears and cried for the remainder of the first act. It was clear after two songs that Mitchell is a genius and it's rare to be in the presence of genius and hear and see a masterpiece realized right in front of you.

Eurydice was a hungry young girl A runaway from everywhere she'd ever been She was no stranger to the world No stranger to the wind Weather ain't the way it was before Ain't no spring or fall at all anymore It's either blazing hot or freezing cold Any way the wind blows And there ain't a thing that you can do When the weather takes a turn on you 'Cept for hurry up and hit the road Any way the wind blows Do you hear that sound (Wind comes up, move) to another town Ain't nobody gonna stick around When the dark clouds roll Any way the wind blows You met the Fates Remember them (anybody got a match?) Always singing in the back of your mind (gimme that) Wherever it was, this young girl went The fates were close behind People turn on you just like the wind Everybody is a fair-weather friend In the end you're better off alone Any way the wind blows When your body aches to lay it down When you're hungry and there ain't enough to go 'round Ain't no length to which a girl won't go Any way the wind blows and sometimes you think (Wind comes up, you) would do anything Just to fill your belly full of food Find a bed that you could fall into Where the weather wouldn't follow you Wherever you go Any way the wind blows Now Orpheus was the son of a muse And you know how those muses are Sometimes they abandon you And this poor boy He wore his heart out on his sleeve You might say he was naive to the ways of the world But he had a way with words And the rhythm and the rhyme And he sang just like a bird up on a line And it ain't because I'm kind But his mama was a friend of mine And I liked to hear him sing And his way of seeing things So I took him underneath my wing And that is where he stayed Until one day

This whole album has definitely had songs released where I'm pretty disappointed, but then tracks like this get released and feel like i'm first discovering Hadestown all over again. If anything, I wish Hermes talked less. It kind of ruins the song for me and had exposition that I don’t think is really necessary. Like, the whole part where he says he takes Orpheus under his wing? As in like raised him? But then treats him as anything but for the rest of the show? And the original never had that part either. I prefer what Hermes was before this.

There’s a lot of changes and performances on this album that greatly disappointed me. Eva continuously stands out though

@agenttheater55 жыл бұрын
What do you expect? He said it himself, kindness isn't part of his nature. You can take someone under your wing or bring them up without necessarily kind to them. As far as he is able to care for a human, he cares for Orpheus, he shows it in his own way. You heard in the off-broadway recording of 'Wait for me' how reluctant he was to tell him the other way to get to hadestown. Here at least we have the way he said 'Go on' in versions 1 and 3 of 'Epic'. He's the messenger of the gods, his job is to tell people what's what, has no control over how they may react to or interpret his news. Besides, the whole point about Greek drama was that there was a chorus describing everything that happened.
