If you don't have money frivolous stuff can be the different between scraping by and not, but honestly if you do have money frivolous stuff honestly makes less of a difference than you'd think. Half my paycheck goes to rent, maybe half of what's left goes to food and other necessities, and I'm pretty willing to blow a fair bit of money on dumb stuff that makes me happy, but I'm still saving money at a respectable rate. The whole "avocado toast" thing is just blaming the victim and refusing to acknowledge that ordinary people are working harder for less real money than they used to.
