The Sultan understood Islam and Tawhid that's why he covered up the images inside it. If Prayers are going to resume, then a big cloth with the Shahada should cover up those images during Prayers. Then when tourists come, the cloth could be rolled up. But the true way is to remove all those pictures. Narrated 'Aishah رضي الله عنها: "Umm Habiba and Umm Salamah رضي الله عنهما mentioned a church that they had seen in Ethiopia, and in the church there were pictures. When they told the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم of this, he said: "Those people are such that if a pious man amongst them died, they build a place of worship over his grave and paint these pictures in it. Those people will be Allah's worst creatures on the Day of Resurrection. " [Sahih al-Bukhari » Book of Merits of the Helpers in Madinah (Ansaar)] It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما said: "Jibreel (Gabriel) عليه السلام promised to visit the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم but he was late and the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم grew concerned. The Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم went out and saw him, and he told him of his concern and he said to him: "We [angels] do not enter a house in which there is an image or a dog." [Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5960)] It was narrated that Aslam رحمه الله the freed slave of 'Umar رضي الله عنه said: When 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه went to Syria, one of the leaders of the christians made food for him and called him. 'Umar رضي الله عنه said: 'We will not enter your churches because of the images that are in them - meaning the statues.' " [Narrated by ‘Abd al-Razzaaq in al-Musannaf (1/411 and 10/398)] 'Ali Ibn Abi Taalib رضي الله عنه said: "Shall I not send you on the same mission as the Messenger of Allah صلي الله عليه وسلم sent me? I'm glad I got to see the Hagia Sophia the last year before it was converted back into a mosque. What a shame that Turkey is playing politics with religion using UNESCO world heritage site. The stunning Blue Mosque is literally a stone throw away from the Hagia Sophia - there is zero need to have two mosques of that size standing next to each other. And let's face it - the Suleymaniye Mosque outshines both the Hagia and the Blue and is absolutely colossal.

There’s nothing wrong with the Republic of Turkey cancelling a decision they made back in 1934. The 1934 decision was illegal. Today, the Republic of Turkey has fixed the problem by converting the Hagia Sophia back to its legal purpose, a mosque. Facts: Ayasofya was illegally turned into a Museum. The rare carpet laid on the floor was cut and distributed here and there as souvenirs. Antique chandaliers were taken to the foundry to be melted. The madrasah adjacent to the mosque was destroyed without reason. The famous masterpiece plates seen in the interior could not be removed from the doors being too small so they left them inside. This is only the bare mininum of the illegal destruction of important things to do with the mosque. They also planned to knock down the minarets but historian Ibrahim Hakki Konyali published a report saying the minarets support the dome and if they are destroyed, the Hagia Sophia will collapse. They backtracked on the idea, but the minaret of Little Ayasofya was destroyed overnight without any legal basis. During the hundreds of years it operated as a mosque, symbolic Christian artifacts/tiles/paintings and the tomb on the second floor were all preserved and protected. Even though Muslims were praying there all the time, they respected and protected its heritage as a Church. Compare this with those leaders/countries who cry croc-tears the most over Ayasofya, and see how many Mosques/temples etc they have for their minority citizens. Greece is one of the biggest culprits. Still not one official Mosque in Athens, even though native Muslims have been pleading for years, yet they have the audacity to throw mud over the action of reverting Hagia Sophia to a mosque

Peter wasn't popular with those (religious and secular) elites, who benefited from the status quo.The same goes for the Islamic elites in Turkey In both cases the reforms mostly affected the elite who lost power with the reforms. Hazrat Umar Farooq when he captured Jerusalem refused to pray inside the church even when invited to do so because he wanted to maintain its integrity as Christian site of prayer. He built a built a beautiful mosque a few steps from the church. We can build our own mosques to pray.

That isn't the issue though, for the past century it hasn't been a church or a mosque but a museum. Well when you quote hazrat umar(ra) you should know that it was his decision to do it. Under the sharia law of islam, which sultan mehmet and umar (ra) both followed, the khalifa has option to either abandon, destroy or convert the religious place of non muslims in a city which came under mulism authority by war. Hazrat Umar(r.a) decision to not pray in church was his take and sultan mehmet's decision to convert it into mosque was his take. Both comes under sharia islamic law, so you can't counter one with another.
