Best review/demonstration of the Hahnemuhle line of papers on youtube. Real work on paper! I use them all the time and it seems I've settled with rough texture on most of their papers. I find the cold press/matt surface is a little too smoth in comparison with Fabriano 5 cold press (my favorite, but more expensive). I don´t see too much of a performance difference between Expression and Harmony; at least not as much as Akademie vs Professional papers. I'm using Harmony in block format a lot (12" x 16") and it behaves nicely. Expression(in sheet) has a crazy amount of expansion when wet. Way more than I'd like, but it dries flat. It reminds me of Lana Sugarcane. All in all, they're excellent papers. Best bang for the buck, at least in my country.

Hi Diego, thanks for adding your experience with these papers. They were all new to me as we don't get this brand much in the United States. The rough sounds lovely, I might have to see if I can find it! Thanks for commenting!

Diego Valdevino So Diego, besides the handling of water what is the difference in the Cezanne and Expression? Wait or is it Harmony? I thought she used Cezanne. I am confused, I think. Nevermind my question - I do not think I can afford it. It's "Arches" or "Stonehenge" and "Bee" for me. Just fun to try others. Thanks anyway!
@diegogval6 жыл бұрын
According to Hahnemuehle, both Expression and Harmony are more heavily sized than their Akademie/Mould-made couterparts to better support masking tape and fluid. IMO, Harmony is better than the papers from the Akademy line I've used, while Expression is below the mould-made line. Harmony cold press texture is nice, but borders being too smooth. Expression has a smoother surface and is cold press only, although it is "interesting" for lack of a better term( reminds me of a soft linen canvas). Cezanne is more "pleasant" to use and has a texture kind like Canson Heritage. All in all Cezanne is a superior paper, while Expression is more middle of the road. Eg., I can buy a block of 20 sheets of Expression cheaper than a block of Cezanne ( 12"x16" BRL 139,90 vs BRL 149,90). An intermediate line of papers for an intermediate painter like myself. Fit like gloves.
@cassiescreations98286 жыл бұрын
Diego Valdevino I still consider myself a beginner but I like trying different papers - 100% rag cotton, that is. I also enjoy the rough surfaces for texture (that "canvas type" sounds interesting). This is all good information. Perhaps I can find some sample packs at my American store. Thanks so very much.

Lindsay, what wonderful postcard paintings. I am new to watercoloring and your videos and recommendations really inspire me. I lov supplies and often I'm afraid to mess up or hesitant to jump in. Your style has helped me get over this fear and get going. I think each of those postcards would make fabulous tutorials. I'm often intimidated by larger page tutorials. I love your style of teaching and explaining. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent. I've actually purchased several items upon your video reviews. I found this on amazon: amzn.to/2M31olp but Jerry's Artarama also had some (actually the amazon one is sold by jerrys) the Beste and SoHo ones are good (the soho one is a bargain, let me find it, the #6 is $3.49 half of the amazon price: www.jerrysartarama.com/soho-urban-artist-brushes ) so Jerry's is probably your best bet if you are in the united states. If you are u Europe Jackson's might be a better bet and PlayCrafts in the Philippines has them too.

I understand blending, but I don't know the term blooming. Could you please explain.
@thefrugalcrafter6 жыл бұрын
blooming occurs when the paper dries unevenly and you end up with ruffle edge shape in a wash that looks like a flower or cauliflower. You can force a bloom by dropping water into a damp wash but often they are created unintentionally (and un wanted) on wood based paper.

Hi Lindsay! What is the difference between the Cezanne paper and the Expressions paper?
@thefrugalcrafter6 жыл бұрын
The cezanne is mould made and the block has 10 sheets and the expression is machine made I think, the texture is more uniform. I think the cezanne texture is nicer, like Arches but they are both 100% cotton and externally sized. The expression block has 20 sheets but they may offer other sheet count pads or blocks.

the Cezanne is mould made and the expression is machine made so the texture on the expression is a little more uniform. I prefer the mould made but they are both really nice:

The mould made is a much stronger paper and can handle more water and yet return to flat. Joe, Hahnemühle USA.

Thanks for sharing that info!! Im a begginer at colored pencil drawing and im strugling with choosing between the Hahnemuhle Cezanne (100% cotton) vs Harmony (celulose) cause the cotton is twice the price!! Have you ever tested those papers with colored pencil ? If not, would you guess that the cotton one would be worth the diference? Thank you!

For colored pencil I think either would suffice. I'd check out a colors pencil chalked like Lachri fine art and see what she uses.
