You don't get animes that are willing to be like Haibane these days. the early 2000s was a special period for anime before the 2008 crash closed out so many good studios and make so many groups fear taking risks. There were also so many brilliant writers and show runners that just got free reign to create things that no one would approve today.

yeah I was just re-watching HB because of 20th anniversary of original broadast on tv, it's incredible how in relatively short span of time(ending of 2002- beginning of 2003) such shows like Haibane Renmei Kino-no-Tabi and Texhnolyze were aired one after another.

On the other hand we have more mainstream anime of high quality. In 2000s anime was more for experimental and not attractive for first time viewers. Also it is really hard to just marathon old anime as they are too different, if it is not Abe works.

This ending (and the soundtrack in general) fits so well the atmosphere of the anime, so melancholic yet beautiful.

Just watched this anime completely through. I loved it, pushed out Steins Gate for 2nd favorite of all time! I love how it starts with cute girls doing cute things, but then this creepy song is at the end of every episode and you slowly get the feeling that something is not right... This anime is *almost a daytime horror, such a great aesthetic and atmosphere.

Does anyone know any authors like Yoshitoshi Abe and Naoki Urasawa, if you don’t know Naoki Urasawa, he made the manga Monster, which is incredible, i recommend, it has a entirely human looking anime art style and unique story w 74 episodes
