To me, the claiming rule makes complete sense in amateur racing as a way of allowing everyone to be competitive. That said, there may be better ways to ensure fair competition. This can certainly debated and well intentioned people can differ in opinion. However, there is no debate that this rule was in place at the time. The bigger issue BY FAR, is the multiple reports of how this was handled which clearly requires an AMA investigation. If the investigation finds that any adult isolated, interrogated, berated, intimidated, etc. a MINOR child without their parents or guardian present, that needs to result in a HUGE penalty from the AMA. If it was a member of the MX Sports promotion group, a member of the Star Yamaha team, etc., there needs to be even bigger penalties and people should be fired. Additionally, if a manufacturer was found to be making threats to a dealer in an effort to indirectly strong arm a rider into not making a completely legal claim, that should also involve a huge penalty. Anything less than a full investigation and appropriate penalties will significantly impugn the integrity of the AMA and would establish a precedent that they can be strong-armed themselves, even at the expense of a child competing under their authority. The upside is if they find that the kid wasn't pressured and these reports are false, then everyone is cleared. Last thought. There's basically no chance Haiden had anything to do with this, and he's a child as well, so he should not be held accountable in any way. He seems like a great kid who's crazy fast and doing everything asked of him. I can't wait to see him turn pro.

So I love analogies. If you dined at a restaurant and laid down a $1000 tip, and came back the next day and expected change, do you think you would get it? Of course not. When anyone participated in an amateur MX race they are subject to this same thing if they invest more than the claiming rule amount. It is more for LL vs normal AMA events but it’s idiotic to over invest and risk the loss of value and secrets or else you chalk it up as the cost of doing business for Star to lay down more than 17k worth of bike at this race. Also, if they hadn’t invested so much, then it would have solved 2 problems. 1) they wouldn’t wouldn’t lose the value and 2) the worst part, they wouldn’t lose a bike that they have probably spent weeks or months getting prepped just the way Deegan wants it, when he will probably race the same bike in the amateur days the next 2 weeks to get the points to go pro. Realistically they have several of these bikes and could give him the exact replica if the issue was sentimental value. Likely though, they laid their money on the table thinking it would be there when they came back. The other antics are pure extortion threatening the sponsor.

You’re 100%. If it’s a rule, it should be honored in good faith by all parties. In my opinion Yamaha should have just leaned into it and used it as a positive PR move, possibly even used it as advertising material. The way it was handled is seriously wrong. That being said, I think the rule in practice is a really bad idea. It makes the manufacturers hold back on potential race technology which is what advances the sport. For amateur racing however, one could argue that such a rule could help keep the costs of equipment from getting outrageous and could narrow the gap in equipment, making the racing more competitive and fair at the start line. For it to work, however, it needs to be honored in a positive, sportsmanlike manner. Shame on Yamaha for allowing people to represent them like this. Further, a talent like Deegan doesn’t need exotic machinery at the amateur lever, the kid would win on bone stock equipment. Me personally I think the rule makes sense, but I don't think its right how they just claimed his bike that is set for him how he wants with an upcoming championship, therefore Haiden now has limited time to get a new bike up to spec and how he needs it. For instance, that bike is set up how he wants it his handle bar placement, how much and where his breaks react, what the suspension is set to, etc. The rule is understandable, but I definitely think there needs to be limitations.
@RatchetGamingNation2 жыл бұрын
You think a factory team full of factory trained mechanics don't already have a full documentation of every single aspect of his bike? They can replace Deegan's bike with another one in less than 24 hours to the exact same specs. This is just the Deegans being upset because they knew they shouldn't have taken a factory bike to Loretta's. If the kid got away with it, they could duplicate everything about Star's top-level bikes and market it. That's why there was such a hasty knee-jerk reaction by the whole Deegan team, getting Yamaha involved and bullying this kid into revoking his claim. It's simply the top-level teams bullying anyone below them.

Claim rules are prevalent in a lot of motorsports and while claimed drivers/riders might be annoyed it rarely devolves into this. Know the dollar amount you can be claimed for in the rulebook and don't overbuild for your class. Having a pro team throwing their weight around at an amateur event is BS. Loretta's is barely amateur these days anyway, maybe it's time to make some big changes to avoid having the millionaires throw a hissy fit when their factory bike gets claimed.

I think... but feel free to correct Me if I'm wrong. Only a competitor can "claim" a bike right? I think if AMA would change the rule and make it where Anyone can claim a bike, but have to pay 2 times what a retail stock bike would cost, that would help level the playing field. Factory's would not give Amateur's a Pro Level bike's in fear of loosing the research and development that they have rightly paid for, only to have someone claim it, and be able to reverse engineer it and market it. I'm not saying that is what happened. But a Factory or team would think twice about giving a kid a $30,000 to $50,000 dollar bike with factory trick shit on it with the possibility of loosing it. Amateur kids supported by Mom and Dad, and uncle Bruce could never afford. This would keep it a reasonable "Mod Class" for "Amateur's". And not put a kid that wants to go Pro someday in harms way from powerful intimidating Factory's or possibly wack job parent's or being "blackballed" That could end up tarnishing their career or making them look like a whining sore loser. Sorry... Toni Alessi comes to mind for some reason.

All 250b mod bikes have atleast 14 to 15k in them. So it's more than 2 times value for anyone in that mod 250b class Schofield wasn't just in the room with Tim from mx sports and Brian deegan. The ama race director was in the room also as it held in his office, which is also told office. Next Yamaha can't just pull a dealership agreement from a dealer. It's illegal. The court system wouldn't allow it. Schofield said in interview he didn't get anything when he dropped it.

I really respect the deegans but they can’t be mad if someone try’s to get their bike. It’s part of the rules, I feel like star and the deegans are manipulating the ama.

Brennan played it perfectly, should’ve really pushed the matter and allowed his engine builder to go through that bike after he rode it. I don’t think it was anybody’s idea but Brennan because he rides and is also a mechanic. Sure he wants to see what all a Star Factory bike has to offer that he dang sure can’t get his hands on in his world! AMA needs to do an investigation because the only person that who’s gonna be disciplined is Brennan for following the rules. Kid is 17 and raised that money himself, let him get the bike. I believe the kid!

Never really understood the claiming rule in amateur racing. This class, if I’m not mistaking, is a mod class which means the rider can do a lot of things to the bike short of going over a set limit on the engine size. What this really is, is plain ole simple jealousy towards another. Listen to the winners in each class, they were naming off all kinds of sponsors and their bike was tricked out, too. I saw another thread were someone was naming off all the aftermarket parts that he thought was on the bike. So what. Not everyone in life is going to be a winner, just deal with it.
@1176hambone2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the AMA rule says you don't have to deal with it. That's the point. Bad sportsmanship on the part Yamaha, promoter, and the AMA. They were the ones who should just "deal with it"... instead they used intimidation, bribery, and coercion to conceal the advantage.

Simple fix for anybody who does not want their bike taken/sold ,Don’t overspend and use all these factory parts, Most families sacrifice everything so the kid gets an EVEN chance and some families don’t ,The rule is for this very situation,Nobody likes rules but that’s the game if you wanna run what you bring

It may seem extreme but is a pretty effective rule. If you have a bike you don't want to risk losing bring a stock bike with only a few mods. In this case i think Deegan didn't need a full on factory bike to win. Just sad that the experience of the largest armature race was spoiled by this for a lot of young riders. I like Yamaha and the Deegans but i think they might have made a mistake here.

I find this rule very interesting coming from the golf world. I’d be pissed if I had to sell my clubs after an event regardless the price. Imagine someone being able to claim tiger woods putter after one of his majors for 2x msrp ha. Dumb rule, way better way I’d imagine to keep teams and riders in check from cheating if this is what it was about. I’m guessing the kid thought for 17k he could make some KZbin videos and then sell it to some old rich deegan fan for 100k. I blame the rule book on this one. I see every parties point of view.

Tiger woods is a pro. Golf clubs don’t have the crazy price tag and technology these bikes do. The analogy doesn’t make sense.

Well before Tiger turned pro Im sure there would have been loads of ppl who would have signed up to buy tiger woods clubs after his 3rd US amateur title. Imagine what those would sell for.
