Kevin, I know you probably aren't able to keep track of all your followers (there's so many of us now!). But at least for engagement, I wanted to mention that I've been commenting on your garden tour and homestead channel videos for a few years now, about how your projects have me excited to get in my own space to be doing the same thing. And I just wanted to share that in 2023 I'll finally be in the process of speaking to a realtor and finding my own little corner to start growing things in, with any luck that I'm able to find something in my price range. You're an inspiration, and please keep doing what you're doing to excite and inspire the rest of us. I know I'll be using the solar chicken coop door when fowl eventually come into the picture

Strawberries are very hardy!! I'm in Alberta, and they get covered in snow and come back in the spring! But I'm blown away by your citrus hedge!!! I have a baby lemon tree here in the house but it's just a little baby yet! 🍋 I love how you can grew all year around! I'm sure if I could, I wouldn't get the seasonally depression when the snow covers the ground 🥲 Happy New years to you and the Epic Gardening Team! 💞

Mustard greens are so good! And they cook down to nothing like spinach so thats not a lot. Strip the leaves off the stems, chop, wash well 2-3 times, place in a large stock pot on the stove, add 2 cups water, minced garlic - we like a lot! Cook greens down until they wilt a little. Add a splash or two of balsamic vinegar, some red pepper flakes, 2-3 tsp of bacon fat, and a shot or two of your favorite hot sauce at the end. Let cook, covered, till all but 1/4 of the water is evaporated and the greens are nice and tender. At least 20-30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, more vinegar or hot sauce to taste. 😋

Behind the pond on that bare spot you can create a small milkweed patch, attract some butterflies to the garden pond area. You can also plant other butterfly attractive flowers, but milkweed seems to grow better several grouped together. And for pops of color around the stones, and in front of any tall plantings, our state flower the California Poppy. Behind all of that you could try planting agave, great for looks and down the road... a possible future episode.😁

For any greens you have too much of just dehydrate the excess and make a greens powder. Then you can add the powder to any recipe to add more nutrients - spaghetti sauce... soups... meatloaf.... anything. Looks great. I'm in 9b FL and those frosts were devastating for us. My greens made it.. the bananas and papaya not so much. The bananas will grow new pups but there won't be any bananas this year. For your bananas... the secret is heavy heavy feeding and tons of water. I compost directly into the circle. They get watered daily for at least 10 mins during the heat.... They are also heavily mulched and I add high nitro plants like mexican sunflower. Mine grow so many pups that we have to chop and drop them (they feed their brethren) once we have the "circle of three".

Chop the lemon grass leaves, and put it into a simple mustard green soup! Sautéed the lemon grass greens/leaves in EVOO + Salt, Garlic optional. Add in chicken broth or water, bring to boil, drop mustards in. In approx less than 10 mins, you’ll have a delicious mustard green soup
@juliettel.3022 жыл бұрын
Besides cooking them fresh in sauté & soup, pickled mustard are delicious & healthy and provide a totally different taste. No need to use vinegar, just make a brine with ratio of 2 cups water/1 soup spoon salt ( between size of 1tsp & 1tbs) & pinch of sugar. Add brined to washed & cut mustard (about 1” strips, can make strips shorter 1” x 2-3”). Be sure to use the stems of the leaves & plants…they make crispy pickled mustard and are the best parts! Pack in the mustard tightly in jar (mason, repurpose glass jars or plastic food containers etc depending on how much you make). Can add a bit of flat leave chive or thin slices of round onion.) Leave a little space to prevent liquid seeping out during fermentation. Keep jar/s on counter. In about 4-7 days depending on weather, pickled mustard should be ready. It takes longer in cooler weather. Refrigerate once pickled enough to your liking. Pickled mustard can be eaten as is for side dish with savory meats like chicken/pork/beef adobo. It can be sauté, add to fried rice (yum!), or made into a soup with meat…make sure to use some of the pickled brine for flavor (kind of like a hot & sour soup). These are some ways we use in Vietnamese cooking. Enjoy!

Happy New Year 🎉! I grow a big bed of Mustard greens in winter, and wash, blanch, chop, and freeze in 1-cup jars. Add throughout the year to a pot of beans, so good! They grow so well in CA winters that I wouldn’t bother growing them in the summer. Let them bolt and feed the bees in early spring.

In the northeast US, I'm envious of your winter production and projects. You asked what you can do with mustard greens, and I'd suggest looking at Indian recipes for saag. Chana saag (with chickpea) and aloo saag (with potato) are classics in the US, but there are many variations and I'm sure also alternate recipes that aren't stewed greens in a creamy sauce. The greens can be super pungent -- I chop them for cooking outside -- but they mellow and get a silky texture with long (or pressure) cooking and don't develop off-flavors like spinach and other brassicas do. I didn't believe it until I did it myself, because I had always seen spinach get mushy and bitter while kale/collards seem to wilt but keep their shape no matter what. Mustards really hit the sweet spot on flavor and texture while being very forgiving on cook time. Since this revelation on how to use them, of course, my mustard greens have not been very successful in the garden (probably I'm starting them too late into fall). Ah well! There's always some challenge to overcome.

We had hail up in Wisconsin as well this year, although it was in September. Softball size, though. I managed to get my Meyer lemon patio tree back in the house in time. Thankfully the rest of my garden was on the side of the house that didn't get hit quite so badly. I've fallen off of watching gardening videos though. Just before the hail storm my local utility company had to drive through my yard to get to the transformer and ran over a corner of my garden fence twice, pulverized my herb garden, and killed the hardy hibiscus my son picked out. It was such a hard year in the garden last year. I'm hoping for a much easier time this year

I started out with a mango tree I planted in 2015 and had the largest crop to the point I was giving mangos away to anyone that wanted them. I also have an avocado tree that was planted over 30 years ago which produced the largest avocados prior to 2007. The tree died down to only one shoot and I started nursing it back in 2014. This past summer I had some much avocados that again I was shipping them to family and friends in New York and all over Florida. I also have mongoes and avocado trees I started from the seeds that I have been giving away. scotch bonnet pepper tree that produced peppers all summer and still producing even with the cold weather. I grew turmeric and ginger which I dried and gridded for power. Started basil, thyme, oregano, scallions, onions and others herbs. Mustard--make "collard" greens! In short, simmer/wilt down with any brassica greens with onion, bacon, and whatever spices suit you. Great greens don't have to be just collard, though I'd avoid spinach and delicate greens like arugula and lettuce. And limes--I'll take them all! Can't grow citrus is the Texas panhandle!
