The CTK Music Director introduces this song and teaches a motion to help familiarize kids with this hymn we'll sing in worship on June 14, 2020.
This week's hymn is a metrical setting of Psalm 72, which looks forward to the coming of David's ultimate heir, who will rule justly, care for the oppressed, and bring light to the nations. "Jesus Shall Reign", another familiar hymn, is also based on this psalm. James Montgomery (1771-1854) was a British editor, hymnwriter, and poet who was committed to works of social justice, including the abolition of slavery. He wrote "Hail to the Lord's Anointed" as a Christmas hymn, and it was first sung with its original eight stanzas on Christmas day, 1821 at a Moravian service. The text fits well in the season of Advent, as it foretells the Messiah's first coming and also anticipates his return. The tune we will sing this week is a new one by singer/songwriter Sandra McCracken.
