Our high school band played in front of the NCO club for him. One of my teenage highlights as I got to see the emperor in person while playing the baritone horn. After WWII when Ethiopia got back Eritrea, the Muslim descendants of Ottomans and former Askaris started a guerilla resistance against the Christian monarch, but the rebellion had become extensive when DERG came into power because the atrocities it inflected. He never forced Eritreans to speak Amharic but the Ottomans and Italians did force you to speak there tongue. Eritreans had the same rights and opportunities as any other Ethiopian and did advance academically to procure high government positions.

Well, it is just good to see that America and Ethiopia has relations. Haile Selassie's represent might and Justice. He played a strong role in world peace back then. Yes, I was just wondering why he was given any black audience. But, still back in those days blacks did not have any real rights or say in the run of the country.

It honestly depended on where you were in America back then. The South of course had Jim Crow and several other states were notorious for discrimination historically, but states like Iowa had some civil rights protections for blacks since like the 1880s or earlier. And by this time (1963), the first two federal Civil Rights Acts had passed in 1957 and 1960, Brown v. Board of Education had been decided nearly a decade earlier (and enforcement was being attempted by Eisenhower AND Kennedy) and momentum was growing for the '64 Civil Rights Act which passed in the following year. Most of the South was still brutally resisting, but nationwide attitudes and policies WERE changing.
