I agree, she's getting drafted regardless but she's staying for that additional "covid" year that's been granted because she understands that she will make more money in college than the pros.

She is staying in college likely because her time at LSU exposed her for not being a polished point guard which would have been her likely position in the pros due to her height. She needs either another year to develop as a 1 or really shine as a 2 with a scoring touch or she will not have to worry about being in the league 5 years. For the top recognized stars NIL doesn’t mean they make more money in college than in the pros it means they don’t have to rush to because they can make significant money as a student.

@@yourtakenetwork4974 I Understand how the salary is structured. But what I don’t get is why people always compare the NIL deals to those that did’nt. For the top players the deals travel, they are not local or 1 year deals. They are just called endorsements. People are getting caught up on a label. Nil is endorsement money that would travel with her as a top player because they are multi year deals,so she isn’t losing money by going pro.
@politicallil70609 ай бұрын
It wasn't about the money Pro scouts wanted HVL to add point guard to her skill set before entering the pros. They summarized that it would improve her draft position and help her stay in the league. They wanted to see her play the interchangeable guard positions with a high level program full of athletes. Her Louisville coach told her she couldn't play PG in his system and that it wasn't his responsibility to develop her pro game. So the young lady decided to go somewhere she'd have the opportunity to learn the position. She leveraged her relationship with Kim Mulkey who had not only recruited her in high school but also had coverted a number of shooting guards to PG'S that went on into the pros. She also had to go where there was a need and where she could start. LSU met the needs. Playing at LSU simply exposed flaws to the public in her offensive and defensive parts of her game that pro scouts had already identified. The problem is she didn't make significant improvements by seasons end and the LSU style of run and gun in transition and attacking the paint in the half court just didn't work out. Her going into the portal given her disappointment of the LSU fan base was smart in order to rebrand herself. Its hard to learn a new position and new system in that small amount of time. People expected her conversion to have the same production as Alexis Morris but no one took into consideration that Alexis played in Mulkey's system for three years. I still think she will have a pro career.dhr has enough political capital in the sports to be given an opportunity.

All these folks talking about "Gil speaking facts" just shows that if you're famous and say something with even a little bit of gravitas and authority people will believe it. Caitlin Clark is guaranteed to be the #1 pick in the draft and she's locked into a rookie contract that will pay her $76.5K first year, $78K second year, $85K third year and an option for the 4th at $97.5K. That's less than 250K after 3 years. Hailey, according to Gil was a top 5 draft prospect. Those numbers go down fast after the 4th pick. With her NIL deals with Adidas alone she'll likely make more than the first year salary for a #5 pick. And nothing is stopping her from still being drafted whenever she leaves college. She has in no way "ruined" her WNBA career. She's simply monetized her current marketability with little to no negative impact on her future earnings.

In addition to making the extra money like everyone’s pointing out in the comments; she’s still gonna get drafted next year. The reality of the situation is she’s an extremely undersized and one dimensional player. She capitalized on her best chance to make money with the transfer, and even with the bad season she would still likely be a 3rd round pick. If she has a bounce back season after transferring again this year she can somewhat get that draft stock back up. With the limited roster spots in the W we see top 10 picks get cut pretty quickly if things aren’t working out, and with HVL’s flaws there’s a good chance she could’ve been drafted high, cut early on, and never touched the money she is getting for staying in school.

WNBA rookie scale contracts for top picks are about 75k a year for 3 years, plus a fourth year option. The average WNBA salary is about $100k. So assuming she made 75k for 4 seasons, then an average contract extension kicked in after she finished her rookie contract, she would have needed almost 6 years in the WNBA to accumulate the money that she earned in 1 season in college, I’d say she made a good decision. Obviously there’s a chance that she develops into a star, and gets a 200k contract after her rookie one, but even then, she would still need almost 5 years to get to 500k. If that 500k number is true, then she made double what the highest paid WNBA player makes. As a college student. And she’s still going to the league if she wants to.

Avg WNBA contract is 100k. So she makes more in college than the pros

This era that were in tends to give players second chances. I’m sure she can secure that money and work her way into the WNBA

Naw, that LSU coach is a snake. And it will come back to bite her in the rear one day. She threw that game and it is easy to see. You don’t leave someone that short on a taller shooting guard that is that cold. After 10 points the coach should have placed a better defender on Clark.

@quintinr.6760 If you don’t know the lsu roster you can’t speak on it… they didn’t have anybody to put on her.. they play 7 people… you can’t put flau’jae on her cuz she’s needed on the offensive end 🤷🏾♂️ they tried to put poa on her and that didn’t work either:

@@kpken504at least three women on that team could've checked her I know for a fact Williams could've bodied her physically the LSU coach just dropped the ball

Yeah, was definitely worth it. That's several years of salary in the WNBA, and who knows if she'll get injured or even make it big in the WBNA. Take the sure money, get your degree, and still take your chances in the pros.

No her coach left her on a island for all but 2 minutes of the game against the Player of the year for Women’s Basket. Hence her O suffer that game. Yes she should go get her bag.

She needed to show an ability to play point which is why she went to LSU. Her poor year of point guard play at LSU has harmed her chances at making the WNBA.

Considering the highest salary offered in the wnba, yeah she wise following that extra $200k NIL contract; especially that she's talented.

I'm sure wherever she goes next has a bag, plus she'll still get drafted. She should go to Iowa and follow CC's footsteps

How did it wreck her career? She got her a55 busted by a better player. It happens. There is no career bag, there's just regular people money after college. There is only NIL bag. What is he talking about?

tough to say she shouldn't have taken it, but she lost way more than just her draft status. She could have been the person that when she wanted to go to anything Louisville, they give her free tickets and show her on the jumbotron and the whole arena standing up. Now she has no college home either.

It is sad what they have turned the college game into. I do not mind them getting paid but now it has gotten ridiculous. Some of them are earning millions and others are still scratching by. And to top it off you have mercenaries chasing money and titles. It is worse than free agency in pro sports

Wrong. She was playing out of position at LSU and it showed. She is not a natural pg, she's always just been a scorer.

Louisville helped hide all her flaws.. she got exposed big time at lsu and she's proving that she's incapable of committing to a team/cause. everyone talking about the instant bag doesn't realize that she's jeopardizing her future and legacy as a player. Nor do they understand how taxes work..
