When gay marriage was still the religious liberty issue du jour I remember taking it from the other direction. I grew up Episcopalian, a sect of Christianity that recognized gay marriage, but by law in many states we could not sanctify legal marriages based on our own beliefs. So many Episcopalians would make the argument that gay marriage bans were actually ANTI-religious freedom, because it meant the state limited the giving of a sacrament in our own congregations. The Mormons historically were actually big on religious liberty and seperation of church and state very early in their history specifically because the mechanism of the state was used to persecute them. They then forgot what they learned as soon as they suddenly had control of a government.

And you’re also spot on with the exchange of ideas. I love “meeting” or finding people from different backgrounds and experiences to learn from. I do my best to follow the teachings of Mr. Rogers which is basically “be kind to one another, to love and appreciate others for who they are”. And while Mr. Rogers was a educated and ordained as a minister, he NEVER preached religion in his programming. He taught kindness and compassion and love and acceptance of EVERYONE. “I like you just the way you are,” he’d tell you through the television screen. He broke boundaries because to him, those boundaries didn’t exist.

@TheCabIe3 ай бұрын
@@markbryant9806 The people who wanted to control others OBVIOUSLY wanted that belief in God would be the top priority. It's the same reason the worst of the scum like murderers or rapists can be forgiven and go to heaven, but you know what happens to people who don't believe in God or worship other gods (who God, if he existed, would know don't actually exist btw, which kind of makes it curious, why would he be so offended that people worship something that he knows doesn't exist. Anyway.)? They get cursed for three generations (so making it so that children of "infidels" inherit their fathers' sins, something any civilized society never does, for ANY kind of crime), far worse than any other actions. Why would that be? I can tell you why - because the "sin" of "unbelieving" makes the control of religion dwindle and that's what they recognized early on. So commandments specifically mentioning "having other gods before me" are there for a reason - to instill that psychological fear that bad things will happen if you don't follow the script that's given to you. It makes sense it worked on people for many centuries, but to fall for this sort of basic psychological trick in 21st century now that we have the benefit of hindsight as well as understand our psychology way better, is ludicrous.
