I’ve been playing with my CHOMPI for a few days now. What I’ve found to be a really interesting workflow is to layer up multiple samples in the looper, then copy the loop buffer back to the sampler buffer. That becomes a new composite instrument which you can play- clear the loop buffer and start over with this new composite instrument. I agree with a lot of your comments, particularly that all of the shift functions should have been labeled on the front panel. There needs to be a level control for sampled voice playback. I’ve also encountered the issue where voices don’t always play, which I assume is a bug. I also feel that the silly names for modes and buffers- CHOMPI, JAMMI, CUBBI- obscures their true functions and adds unnecessary confusion. Despite the limitations, I’m finding CHOMPI to be a fun, immediate, creative instrument, and absolutely capable of making real music.

Well I am a newbie! My knowledge of audio synthesis is thin but I get the basics of what is happening. At first I just took a look at this thinking it was a joke. Then I put my phones on! It seems that they have gotten away from grey, black and silver. Away from old fashioned knobs, patch bays and the like and turned the whole learning kerb of synths to the opposite direction. And why not? With the way its laid out, labelled, signed for its functions, bright colours etc they have entered the market for NEWBIES to make music not knowing the first thing about synthesis. Is this bad? Definitely NO. Why spend years learning how synths work when its there on a plate for you to make music. No...its not a toy totally revolutionary. A kid could master this quickly. I think of it this way. The curtains are drawn, you are behind them and asked to listen to some synth music. Five minutes later the curtains are opened to reveal a six year old playing a pink toy, plastic fairy tale box. I think you will be mind blown. I am deffo getting one. Btw...Pink is a MAN colour don't you know. Moog freaks watch out. This thing is on your tail!

Wow, it sounds just like Hainbach! I wonder how that happened ;) I must admit, I really appreciate your honesty about the slightly janky UI, which is something I always felt the promo videos glossed over. I also know how much you love slowed-down tape, and the interpolation on this is great, so I wasn't at all surprised when your first thing was to slow it way down 😆 I find samplers like this really cute, but for some reason my love of hardware instruments just doesn't extend to samplers. I guess sampling is just so much more chaotic with so many more dimensions to it, that I feel lost without a proper computer to map out what I'm doing. (See all your issues getting layers in the right order and so on on here.)

Awesome inspired audio around the 15 minute mark. It's pretty/very cool what you're able to come up with in such short order. Why is it so hard to find a hardware synth that can do the real-time tape speed manipulation (fast, slow, reverse) as this device does? Such an amazing feature for ambient and soundscapes. The OP-1 can do a little of this, but not as flexible. The closest I could find in my search was the Instruo Lubadh or Make Noise Morphagene, but that’s eurorack ofc. Anyway, I bought a Chompi. This looks fun, but sort of expensive for what it does and has some unusual design choices. There is definitely a segment that likes electromechanical typing keyboards. I might consider this once the OS firms up and goes through a few more debugging iterations and more user-requested features are added. One mechanical bit that I would be concerned about is the little switch to the left of the Chompi button. It looks like it may be getting flipped many times during a session.

Maybe I'm missing something. Are there many more features than a lush reverb, what looks like a tape/lofi and recording/pitching a sample up and down? At this price point why not just get a Digitakt? I like the Quickstart Guide but the fact that Hainbach is consulting the manual so often is not exactly a good sign from a design standpoint. This is definitely my contender for Worst Gear of 2023 considering the functions to price ratio as a start.

The tape style looper is pretty much awesome. I made a whole album on the Digitakt hainbach.bandcamp.com/album/old-suns but then sold it. I don’t like the MPC style of working myself.

I mean I understand wanting a different work flow, but there are definitely other weird things about this. It seems very confused on what it wants to be.

I actually saw this after posting this comment. I understand. Do you know if it uses standard keyboard switches? (mx style posts) if so im sure aftermarket keycaps would happen quickly. Still should be in the core product tho@@Hainbach

It is funny: I have 5 daughters and the nickname of the last one has been CHOMPI since she was born almost 18 years ago! What a coincidence!

Its expensive. In Australia over $900 before freight. Sorry, but there are many other things out there at this price point which would be far better.
