A group of painters got a new purpose. Painting women and mens hair with brushes. See the colorful experience here in our footage from 1960.
M/S of a group of ladies in evening wear seated in what looks like a ballroom at the Red Lion, Hounslow, Middlesex (musicians in the background); behind the girls are two artists wearing floppy berets and smocks; they are holding palates and paint brushes and are painting highlights onto the girls' hair. A row of women sit watching. C/Us of one of the artists and the dark-haired girl; he is giving her silver highlights. All the women have very structured and 'set' hairstyles - brilliant!
M/S of another artist and model; C/U as he mixes colours on his palate, pulling back to show him applying it to the girl's hair. Low angle M/S of two models with an artist standing behind them; he paints the hair of girl on the left (who already has wonderful candy pink hair matching the flower on her dress) and then a young silver-haired girl on the right; C/Us as he puts some red highlights on her hairdo, toning in nicely with a dark pink rose pinned in her hair.
M/S of two more girls sitting and having their hair painted - one is a redhead with an amazing gravity-defying hairdo! (It actually looks like a wig.) C/Us as a pinky-white colour is brushed sparingly onto her hair and of the artist mixing colours on his palate.
Commentator tells us this is "a light-hearted hair colouring competition, organised by Leonard Pountney of Hounslow, who, at the same time, set out to find a solution to the problem of bald heads among men". M/Ss of a man who could be LP or Ivor Spencer and a middle-aged lady enjoying the spectacle; then of a balding man, Michael Fernly, sitting beside John Dobson who is having his very long moustache combed and twisted by a young lady, Shirley Veitch. Commentator says his moustache "has a wing span of 25 inches and is still too short" (to tie over his head).
Various M/Ss and C/Us of Michael Fernly having hair painted on his head by Audrey Dallas-Simpson, a commercial hair artist, using a dark coloured greasepaint. ADS is wearing brilliant cat-eye glasses and a bright patterned shirt printed with the labels of drinks companies such as Bols and Schweppes.
M/S of Leonard Pountney (or Ivor Spencer) and middle-aged lady watching and laughing. When finished MF has a whole head of hair much darker than his original colour, with tufts painted around the forehead; it looks quite effective - if a little flat and shiny! M/S of a middle-aged couple in the audience; the woman fingers the man's sparse hair. M/Ss of ADS standing back proudly to show MF with finished 'hair'; a young couple in the audience applauding.
M/S of the circle of male and female models having their hair painted by four artists in the ballroom.
Note: it's a brilliant film of a hair event organised by Leonard Pountney, who owned a hair salon in Hounslow (this is not mentioned in the film, making it seem all the more bizarre!). Great '60s hairstyles and evening clothes (though the women are sitting down in them).
Same Leonard Pountney is filmed in a few other fantastic Colour Pictorial films. Bizarre as much as entertaining they are all highly recommended - CP 89, CP 405, CP 473 & CP 728. He also briefly appears in CP 250.

What's really sad about this is that these gorgeous young women are now either old ladies or dead.
