The bass player is one the most bad-assed monsters I've heard and it's a damned shame the movie is the only place you can hear him play. The supposedly "official" soundtrack recording is definitely not the actual soundtrack from the film and the bass playing isn't nearly as amazing.

I’ve read that the producers of the stage production HATED the movie adaptation because of the changes that were made. Granted, I’ve never seen a stage production, but from what I’ve read of how it played out on stage, they had to change some stuff because it would have too out there for movie audiences (unless they went full “Pink Floyd’s The Wall” with it where everyone goes “it makes sense if you watch it while you’re high”). That being said, the staging of the movie version of this song always made me think of a bad Pantene commercial. It’s a bit silly

This movie came out in 1979. A real case of bad timing. The hippie influence on America was very nearly spent as the 1980's loomed. Long hair for men had become common enough that having it was meaningless. The musical in opened in New York in 1966, when long hair on men was shocking and a statement of political and social rebellion. This movie premiered at a time when audiences were turning their back on everything it was made to sing about.
