I only halfway agree on the cost issue you mentioned. While it's true, going to Sally's, you can easily drop a good 100$ to 300$ in there getting all the supplies needed to initially bleach, tone, and/or color your hair at home. I've done it myself before. However something to consider is that when I did drop that 300$ at Sally's at least ⅓ of the supplies are reusable (brushes, dishes, measuring, caps, etc..) while the rest of the supplies lasted me well over a year in terms of touch ups, maintenance, or even color changes and redyes later. So in terms of initial cost, you're correct, but in terms of long term cost, you are incorrect. ❤

@@tarynriver I've been doing my own hair now since I was 12 and I'm 42 lol. I have a hard time going to a salon personally due to some bad experiences with bad stylists, however I will never take away the fact that good stylists do deserve the pay they get. As private contractors that 300$ session has to pay chair rental, taxes, way over 300$ worth of supplies, insurance, education, etc.. etc.. etc.. so I do still believe they're worth what's being charged. I made my own dread extensions a few years back and it took me well over 6 months of work to finish them and finally get them in my hair. It's not easy work for sure. I also agree with Brad that if you're going to do your own hair at home you really need to be ready and willing to accept it should you eff it up. So I get it. I'm willing. Not everyone is and that's alright. =3

Yeah I was just about to comment this. Except for my hair length I could get away with only paying $150 at Sally’s for everything and the only thing I went through entirely was the developer because I got the small bottle. Plus it turned out great because I did my research and took 4 hours to do everything. I definitely saved myself a ton of money.

I agree. I have a good amount of thick hair, I just bleached my roots (let them grow out for an entire year to make about 6 inches😬) and it costs me $100 give or take just a few dollars if I need bleach, toner, purple shampoo for in between, developer, etc! If I had to do my whole head I’d say probably add another $50 to $100 but much of that can be used for touch ups in between actual bleaching, bowls brushes etc can be reused so for me it’s more time consuming and slightly less pretty but it still saves me about $100-$150 rather than paying and tipping a stylist!

Brad! I got 3 colors of XMondo and mixed them to have a total of 6 colors. I have curly hair (fine hair with loose coils). I had been bleaching and maintaining it platinum for a long time, my hair was damaged and I decided to try something edgy. (It took 3 of us 5hrs) We put 1 color on each curl, not letting any of them touch the same color. It came out healthy and ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!! 💯 🙌 ❤ THANK YOU BRAD MONDO!!

Nowadays ( I am 54) I am becoming blond because of the overwhelming amount of white hair I have. I am changing my strategy of permanent color, level 7, to semi permanent level 8 with 6% developer, to avoid that my dark hair will turn orange. Let’s see in six months how it looks. All for my hair quality. 🤷‍♀️

@tarynriver just go to a hairstylist once to get it all even. Then you just have to do the roots, and those are easy. I mean, it's a bit tricky in the back, but not impossible, or you can even get someone to help you with the back part. I do it differently than Brad. I go from the front part of the head to the back. That is more manageable for me personally.

i think he's saying it's less expensive to go to a hairstylist when you make a bunch of mistakes and end up needing to go back to the beauty store several times to get a lot of new bleaches to try to keep fixing all the mistakes.... but also not only that, it's expensive to your hair as well because of all the damage you can risk doing to your hair when you don't know what you're doing and keep reapplying bleach, brushing your hair roughly after washing bleach out etc etc when it'd be nicer to your hair to go to a professional who knows what they're doing and can give you tips on how to care for your hair... that's how i understand it anyway.

Brad, you've taught me to NEVER touch my own hair - haircut or colouring, thank you so much! I used to box dye my hair black box dye (I am SO SORRY!). My hair is naturally red and it took yeaaaaaaars to get my hair back to its natural and I lost a lot of length and such because I also used to straighten it a lot. Would rather pay $280 for colour and cut at my hairdresser back home in New Zealand than damage my hair again. Sadly, moved to the UK and am unable to get my hair done. Have trust issues with hairdressers 😅 so am growing out the blonde and going natural for a while x

I think she lives in the van so the only way she'd have enough running water was if she used a shower somewhere. Maybe that's not an option or maybe she doesn't feel comfortable dying her hair in a public bathroom.

I live in my van and have 100% bleached my hair in my van with only a couple of gallons of water :) It was to lighten it to dye later that day. I stopped into a rest stop and did an extra rinse in the sink :)
