Mia just stating facts because even if you watch hair videos explaining hair textures they say things like ‘ this hair type is usually seen in Asian/Africa/European etc people ‘ I’m sorry if it came off as offensive but this hair type is rarely seen in people of other race who don’t have a black relative. But I do want to state that much of type 4 of hair styles and ways to treat it is influenced by black culture because we do primarily have type 4 hair

Black girl here and as the other comments are saying I love how educated he already is!!! Two minutes in when he said “Relaxers are a big deal. You can’t just go back.” And was like you have to grow it out....I went from perms and relaxers to natural over the course of a few years and the amount of non black people who have told me to straighten or relax my hair for performances (I’m in theatre) always broke my heart because when I tried to explain the damage and the time it would take to get my curls back they’d just brush me off. People don’t understand basic research could go a long way. Love this!

Misty Fying It was even worse when my white theatre teacher called my twists snake hair!!! I was pissed and embarrassed... and I ended up wearing a big which was just a bigger Afro that barely fit (my teacher didn’t want me to but oh well) and I did well on that performance so woot woot. As a non POC person, I think that it was terrible and ignorant of people to tell you to relax your hair for a performance and then just get your curls back. I apologize for their absolute stupidity and offensive behavior and comments. That would be like you telling them to go to a salon or go to a drug store and put in an a difficult to roll if you have no experience permanent rod and go through the process for a part and then to simply relax their hair once the show was over. They would react like you told them to fly to Mars and ride a bicycle back. Basically it’s kind of what they are asking you to do only in opposite and they don’t get the fact that it’s your hair=your body. They should have not been so embarrassing and ignorant and instead asked you to wear a wig like they should have. I’m no hairstylist but I’m old enough to know a little about POC hair to know that you have to grow out straightened hair. It takes a long time to grow out hair. I grew out hair dye out of my hair and grew my hair out again to just below my shoulders and the process took three years. So, to tell you that was really stupid. 😢

She did the texturizer, which she left a tad too long, 4 days after she washed her hair if you watched properly. Really, the reason for not doing it on freshly washed hair is for the natural oils to protect the scalp. Otherwise, you have to put a whole lot of petroleum jelly, and be ready to rince that white crack off quickly cause you might burn quickly. But she is a hair stylist. Her YT channel is about hair; I used to watch it a lot. Her hair was like she wanted: not bone straight.

Agreed. I went to cosmetology school and majority don't know what they are doing. It was baffling and I don't let anyone touch my hair as well because I know what goes on behind the scenes. After cosmetology is when you actually learn what and what not to do and technically your first few clients are experiments because that's when you are on your own and don't have anyone guiding you.

That's why I don't let them touch my head with chemicals. I did one time just for a dye job and it's was horrifying to say the least. I walked out with my hair pattern ruined, frizzy (well more frizzy) and damaged. And to top it off I looked like Carrot Top 😂. I've consulted on how to do it myself (bleaching, etc) and it came out with little damage and beautiful.

@@curlynella1011 which school do you go too my school they taught us the basics from cutting to chemical services and coloring to balayage and highlight or baby lights I've learned so much and I'm half way done school my tools are basic we don't use the old school hot comb but we touch base on how it works and how to use it I just finished my online modules for relaxer and they have a service called curl reformation I thought it was a texture relaxer but they call it loose curls or double perm

I want to see them do the touch-ups every 8-16 weeks because that’s usually where the hell starts to happen. It’s not just bad when applying the relaxer to the new growth without over-processing the already relaxed hair but it’s also managing that line of demarcation during the wait period can be a nightmare. So, I'll share so we can have a laugh (and wish I would've filmed so Brad could laugh harder). I am white for those curious, and had very chemical damaged hair when I decided to relax it with the box one from Walmart. Oh I said, olive oil, this won't damage it...it'll be so thick and straight and pretty. Bye flat iron! So I read the instructions to see how long to leave it since it was my first time, and that I shouldn't use it on bleached hair (ah but my hair's dyed black right now I said, I'll be fine). It was not fine. It fell out in clumps. Snapped off to an inch long on the top layer. Turned colors I didn't remember having. The rest of it made me look like a mad scientist. I cried. A lot. And got a wig the following weekend. We refer to it as the relaxident. The ethnic hair section has a lot of great products I can use, but this is not one of them 😂

My grandma used to relax my hair a lot when I was little. I was so glad that my mom made her stop and I went natural. It was discouraging when my mom cut off a lot of my hair, but it grew back way healthier and I'll never get a relaxer again.

I got my first relaxer when I was around 8 yrs old. My natural hair is extremely curly, and I honestly think my mother was very uneducated when it came to taking care of/maintaining my hair. I'm now a mother of 3, a boy and 2 girls. My girls have actually made me realize that my natural hair is beautiful, and I've been relaxer-free for about 5 or 6 years now.. I did a big chop on my hair in 2018, and my hair has now grown out to shoulder length. It's taken some time, but I LOVE my hair... 💜💜

It sounds crazy to comb the hair while relaxing it but it make sense: 1) if you don't you might have some curly and wavy hair sections mixed in with straight hair 2) it help straighten the hair even more by making sure the relax touch and smooth every strand of hair

I have relaxed hair. I am a licensed cosmetologist with about 15 years of experience. Some people scalp is so sensitive they shouldn't get a relaxer due to burning, scabs, breakage etc. For others its absolutely amazing no problems hair just flourishing. To each their own 🤷🏽‍♀️ Find a passionate, licensed professional to help you decide what's best for your hair. 😘

Uncontrolled damage is what you are thinking of - when someone slaps a chemical in their hair (not done by a well-trained professional) and has little idea of how to properly take care of the hair now that the chemical balance has been altered. Leading to breakage, scalp burns, and thinning. Controlled damage is like a "heat trained natural" or chemical applied professionally (color, perm, or relaxer) with guidance on how to care for the hair in an altered state. It's a purposeful alteration of the disulfide bonds in the hair. The hair can be healthy, as long as it's taken care of properly. It's like fire, a fire can be bad if uncontrolled ex: forest fire. Fire can be good when it is controlled ex: campfire. Just because forest fires are bad does that mean no one should ever have a campfire? Also - ARMY! 👋🏾

My mom permed my hair when I was 3 and I’ve had permed hair pretty much all of my life. At first everything was fine and dandy but once I reached 15 my hair began to break off and I went from a little bit past shoulder length to chin length. My hair was fried and damaged and it was embarrassing to wear it outside. Sooooo I big chopped for the first time and after a year of getting hate comments from my family about my hair and “looking like a witch” I relaxed again and the pain I felt when my hair broke off immediately was disheartening. That was 2017 and now I’ve been natural for a year(big chop 2018) and my hair has grown so much more compared to the first big chop. I get comments occasionally from family about perming but I love my hair the way it is and I just know I’m never going back to a perm lol.
