Thanks to rewatching this with you, I just realized something. Ippo is in a weight class higher than he technically should be. It's probably why he's shorter than everybody, or he has so much muscle from squatting buckets that he can't make the lower weight class. I would bet money Jason, as well as all the other featherweights have less body fat then him.

One of the only "mistakes" on boxing rules I've seen in Ippo happens in this episode. If Ippo grabbed the rope to keep himself from going down, that would most likely still be scored a knockdown by the referee. By rule the ropes can't be used to keep from being knocked down.

That may be true, however this fight is not a WBC match, it is JBC (if it even is that). So the rules may be different in regards to using the rope to not take a down. Also Rules may have changed from the time this was originally written in 1989, or aired in 2000. But that is just me being a bit nit picky about things so I have an excuse to say that this Manga series is still going.

@@SSKazega Nah, JBC uses unified boxing rules and the ropes=knockdown thing has been around since long before the manga started. It's referee discretion though so the ref could choose to ignore it if it's not super obvious. And in 1980's japanese boxing, he probably would have. It's just a nitpick anyway, I honestly didn't even notice it the first few times I watched the series. And yea, the manga's still going, but it's been...frustrating, to say the least, for about 3 years.

@Ben Dover You can lean on the ropes or hold the ropes, that isn't the issue. You can't use the ropes to stop a knockdown. So as an example, if a guy gets cracked and stumbles back across the ring and as he's going down he hits the middle rope, and it's obvious the rope is what kept him up, that would most likely be scored a knockdown. Essentially by rule it would be considered a knockdown if holding the rope is the only reason a fighter didn't go down. Just putting your glove on the rope or holding the rope or doing the Ali rope a dope is fine.

@Ben Dover That's not the rule though. It's almost never actually called that way but the ropes can't be user to prevent a knockdown. And it certainly isn't only a knockdown if a part of the body other than the soles of the feet touch the ground. That's what standing 8 counts are. From the official boxing rule guidelines for referees. An official knockdown is ruled in boxing when a fighter is punched and: a) a part of his/her body other than the feet touch the canvas (such as his bottom or glove) b) when a fighter is being held up by the ropes (i.e. the fighter would have fallen had the ropes not been there) c) when a fighter is hanging on, through or over the ropes and d) cannot protect himself and, for whatever reason, is lodged on a position where he can't fall

@Ben Dover The point being actually going down is not the only way to be "knocked down." It's almost never called, but grabbing the ropes to prevent going down is still supposed to be a knockdown. There's no way a 1980's japanese referee is calling it though.

The manga's description of the characters is relatively inaccurate. The character's physique is too strong. But it still a masterpiece though.

I would say the anime more so than the manga. The fighters are maybe slightly more muscular in the manga than they should be for featherweight, but frankly not much, and Ippo, Sendo, Volg, etc are all short for the division meaning more muscle to get to that weight.
