Muslim pilgrims circle the Kaaba as they perform Tawaf at the Grand Mosque, during the annual haj pilgrimage, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
Hundreds of the pilgrims who died in fierce heat at this year's haj were not officially registered with the Saudi authorities, with the result that many had no access to vital services like air-conditioned buses and cool-off tents.
The deaths highlight a looming challenge for organisers as climate change takes hold in the region: the practice of requiring official permits for such services is stirring concern that unregistered pilgrims could increasingly be exposed to life-threatening temperatures.

We believe that if you die performing an act with the intention of pleasing god then u go straight to heaven and your death will be considered as an honorable death. So no these ppl are not stupid and they’re not blaming anyone either. A lot of the times the hajis mentally prepare themselves before they make their pilgrimage they know what they are getting themselves into. A lot of us wish to die honorable deaths like these so again do not say such things out of ignorance.

It will be no surprise if most of those victims suffered just by walking between Muzdalifah and Jamarat n to Mina which is about 8 to 12 kms walk one way. I wish authorities had some kind of transportation in that area especially for people (think golf carts)who are older n weak. So few Trains are not a solution. When u are aware that temperatures will go up to 50 Degrees, Banning all taxis, buses etc is not crowd management but an ill conceived plan initiated by heartless authorities sitting in air conditioned control rooms. Absence of cooling stations en-route manned by medical personnel could have been a great help. To add to misery many people including older people faced the ire of security personnel who literally shooed them the moment they stopped to rest under shade. Even when they see they are exhausted n drained. Not being sympathetic to Haji’s goes against the tenets. There has to be well thought over plans to mitigate the difficulties of the pilgrims for future hajjs. Heat is going to be a factor for several years so better prepare now before we loose more pilgrims in future. This is not jihad but a case of inefficient human beings who are in charge of taking care of Hajj guests.
