Shannon starts up the HackRF to show some of it’s capabilities. Follow along and learn about this new software defined radio peripheral capable of transmission or reception of radio signals!
HackRF - Getting Started and 2 Radio Frequencies at Once
Pentoo, a Linux distribution with full support for HackRF and GNU Radio. Download the latest Pentoo .iso image from one of the mirrors listed at pentoo.ch/download/.
Then burn the .iso to a DVD or use UNetbootin to install the .iso on a USB flash drive.
Boot your computer using the DVD or USB flash drive to run Pentoo.
Once Pentoo is running, type startx at the command line to launch the desktop environment. Accept the "default config" in the first dialog box and then launch a Terminal Emulator window using the icon at the bottom of the screen.
At the time of writing, the current Pentoo .iso (2014.0-RC3) has a minor bug that you need to work around by typing "eselect lapack set 1" at the command line in the terminal window before trying to use GNU Radio. You only need to do this once after starting up Pentoo, but you'll have to do it every time you boot an unmodified .iso.
To verify that your HackRF is detected, type "hackrf_info" at the command line. It should produce a few lines of output including "Found HackRF board." The 3V3, 1V8, RF, and USB LEDs should all be illuminated and are various colors.
Now you can use programs such as gnuradio-companion or gqrx to start experimenting with your HackRF.
Open GNu-radio companion via terminal and open the first HackRF map file.

In ham radio practices. It is common to have an offset where you're listening on one and transmitting on another. Being able to listen to both you're able to hear both sides of the conversation.

You should get your Amateur Radio Licenses, but... if there was an Apocalypse or an EMP and your radio still works after... I do not think the FCC would care if people communicated on Ham Bands... As our Government would be to busy trying to hold this country together and or rebuilding it's infrastructure!

@Michaelebills

@MichaelSersen you are right... country is in a total collapse, unable to maintain society, food, policing, electric and water infrastructure, nuclear power pants going into melt down... the FCC would be on the game with 100s of thousands of RF triangulation vehicles using up valuable government fuel, vehicles, manpower to track down the millions of citizens using RF communication equipment! You definitely do not understand what the government main priorities are during this type of event!

Squelch on. If you wanted to listen to two truckers talking to each other; they would be on the same frequency. Monitoring multiple frequencies could be useful if you wanted to monitor multiple ham radio repeaters at the same time. One of these days I will have to pick up a HackRF. Since I am a ham I can legally operate on many of the frequencies the HackRF covers.

Hello Shannon, how do you transmit with the HackRFone? At 5:20 you tell us to download Pentoo but it is too big to fit onto a CD. How am I supposed to boot up with Pentoo? I have a HackRFone and I am using SDR #. My PC has Windows on it and no other OS. My PC is not listening to the HackRFone black box, but only to the USB cable (the USB cable acts like an antenna).

Yes you should get your ham license! Both of you. There are multiple amateur radio clubs in the bay area. Any one of them can help you. The Livermore Amateur Radio Klub does ham cram classes. In those classes you study for a few hours and then take the test. I am sure both of you would pass with no problems. There is going to be another ham cram sometime soon. I can let know when I find out more info. In case I forget you should go to the LARK website and contact a club officer to get the details from them.

Why would the radio stations sound poorer with a higher sample rate? I thought this would improve the sound quality?
@Taygetea
@Taygetea 9 жыл бұрын
At the higher sample rate, there's a massive torrent of data coming in from the HackRF, and the weaker CPU of her laptop can't keep up. If the CPU was better, it would have sounded better. Or at least it would have reproduced the signal better.

would you really need a ham license in a apacolapsipops?
@Satchmoeddie
@Satchmoeddie 8 жыл бұрын
+THUNDERBOLT No, licenses would mean nothing and SDR would be useless, after an EMP. Unless you have an old tube set, your SDR will be a fancy paper weight, & you won't be able to transmit or receive anything. I am using multiple 4-125As, and am working on an 8877 1500 watt linear that could conceivably do 3000-5000 watts, but at $600-$1400 per tube, I want to run them in a way that they will last a very long time. I will have to option to retap, and pump out 5KW, but why? With PSK31 I can chat with people 2000-10,000 miles away with 5 to 20 watts. The Apache SDR ham radios are awesome, but $4500, and you only have 200 watts out, so add another $12,000 for an Alpha linear, and another $25,000 for antennas, and another $3000 for an antenna tuner. That is the "instant gratification" method.
@minskwatcher
@minskwatcher 8 жыл бұрын
+Seth B not true. If you have those devices shut down during EMP, they should not be damaged in any way. So keep a backup hardware set turned off completely in case of such things happening. It isn't like they'll be hitting you continiously one EMP after another.

Dudes who kept their laptops and a honda invertor generator inside a faraday cage buried deep underground and it would be fine. They would pull it all out after the Big Day and find nobody else has a station up anymore, not even the old Hams with their tube sets. So they'd be talkin to nobody.
@orrinw
@orrinw 6 жыл бұрын
An EMP fries all solid-state (non-tube) electronics, even if they are turned off. But like Warp says, just about nobody would be on the air anyway. ... A Faraday cage deep underground might save electronic equipment, but who has access to deep underground?

@Lync512
@Lync512 8 жыл бұрын
Samuel Seidel Oh yeah, SDR is quite expensive. There are hacks you can do with a hackrf to run the programs however, it would end up making more sense to use the higher end radios. Best bet if you do want to make a *BTS VoIP is save like crazy for a full duplex SDR (like BladeRF). Its not needed to have some of the other features like 2x2MIMO (unless you are playing with LTE (In that case $200 is not a realistic budget for hardware)). It also would help to have a few high gain antennas like the Vert900 antenna. But before hardware Know all of the things you need to to keep it legal. Especially with Tx power and where physically you and the phone are transmitting on the Rf spectrum.

Hi one and all. I am just looking for a bit of HELP ! I am thinking of buying a HackRF One. But I just need some helpful information. I have seen a thing by the name of the Portapack H2 But is that the same thing as a HackRF One, or is it something that you ADD to the HackRFOne. As I am new to SSR radio, and would like to have something that I can use when I am out and about. As I do NOT drive, I would NOT have any power supply and also it is not that easy to carry about a laptop or even a small tablet. So it is NOT technical information that I am looking for, more like practical information. Bye from John.

During a genuine emergency (imminent threat to life or property) the FCC allows you to use any means at your disposal. One of the reasons to get a ham license is so you can get experience playing radio. A disaster is not when you want to get on air for the first time. Also, using your equipment on a regular basis is a good way to make sure it works. You don't want to dig out your radio in an emergency only to find that the batteries are dead or that it's broken and wont transmit.
