On 10/14/23 we attended the annual walk for the wild event at Hakalau forest wildlife refuge. This place was so special and we were so blessed to be able to see/document the Hawaiian native honeycreepers!
Unfortunately the Hawaiian native honeycreeper population is at the risk of extinction due to the southern house mosquitoes transmitting avian malaria to these birds. Check out Birds Not Mosquitos at birdsnotmosquitoes.org to see what they are doing and maybe what you can do to help prevent the birds from going extinct.
