Hakalau forest: Witnessing Hawaiian Native Honeycreepers | Big Island Hawaii

On 10/14/23 we attended the annual walk for the wild event at Hakalau forest wildlife refuge. This place was so special and we were so blessed to be able to see/document the Hawaiian native honeycreepers!
Unfortunately the Hawaiian native honeycreeper population is at the risk of extinction due to the southern house mosquitoes transmitting avian malaria to these birds. At the start of the birding tour when up you said alawi or amakihi, I wanna say that it’s alawi because it has a more dense shadowing around its eyes and doesn’t have as much of a curve bill

I can only imagine the day our beloved forest birds flock our forest again...i can only imagine the noises that I could hear everyday...now...it's just doves, cardinals, sparrows, chickens and myna's...along with parakeets....if only if only. do note, the orange bird at 7 minutes was actually a male akepa, beautiful bird, surprising it's orange was not used with ahu ula

Ah I’ve seen a pu’eo in Wailua on Oahu one night. That would be awesome to photograph it one day! There are native seabirds that would fly along the honolulu coast that maybe you’ve seen

Good thing Hawaii does not have snakes so that it has all the beautiful birds. Brown tree snakes demolished all birds in Guam
