"Hakeem Olajuwon Defensive Highlights Compilation" is a defense compilation mix I made for one of the Greatest Centers Ever, Hakeem Olajuwon. It includes the defensive highlightss of Hakeem Olajuwon against superstars such as Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Shaquille Oneal and Shawn Kemp.

@@nicholausbell2749 that fact actually weakens your argument. More teams means more watered-down. Add that back when there were less teams they still played 80+ games a year so you really got to know your opponents and they got to know you. That being said, Hakeem is one of the greatest ever and an incredible defender, but I have to put Wilt and Russell over him.
@T.Ramby11
@T.Ramby11 4 жыл бұрын
@Don Cornelius it's actually simple math. More teams means the talent is more widely distributed. Less teams means the talent is more evenly distributed. That's why in this era you have so many teams that have 50+ losses, like the Knicks, Suns, Cavs, Bulls, Hawks, etc. Most teams back then had multiple hall of famers. All the best bud.

Great compilation. However, you need some videos where Hakeem gets caught on switches up top, and checks guards, and/or steals balls from them. He also flashes at rebounders and slows down the break, and/or steals the ball from the to. Plus, some blocks away from the basket. Thanks
@zhugelianges
@zhugelianges 5 жыл бұрын
To clarify, that's not just a block and steal highlights of Hakeem, but really how he defends and shuts down opponents, denies their ball catching, covers the whole paint area, chases small guards during fast break and regains position after players try to post up. Hope you guys enjoy=]

Excellent video and the point I’ve been trying to make to everyone. I’ve never seen any player control a game defensively like Hakeem. Forget the stats and pay attention to the intangibles. Not only was Hakeem a one on and team defender, but he defensively controlled the game. It’s a joke that he only got two defensive player of the year awards! Hakeem, not Russell, is the best defender of all time. This video is proof he could guard 1-5!

That play at 7:44 is the most impressive defense I've seen in my life. He switched to Starks at least 4ft past 3p line and ran with Starks until he passed it to the cutter and still got the block at the rim! To me Olajuwon is the greatest defensive player in history! I know blocks and steals weren't recorded in Wilt and Russell's era, but they did shoot 27 more shots a game back then, so if Olajuwon played in that era his stats would be ridiculous just like Wilt's and Russell. And there's no way any of the big men in history can match Olajuwon in steals at all it's not possible. The next closest big to Olajuwon on the all time steals list is David Robinson at #61 all time!

I've never seen a video in KZbin of Hakeem Olajuwon's defense during his peak years. This is really ridiculous. It's mostly just the NBA not wanting to release the footage for whatever reason. Instead we get highlights from his best years on the offensive end.

I noticed something: nobody really talks about how great of a rebounder Hakeem was. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, he's by average the best center rebounder in that era at 11.1 rpg. It's debatable who the best interior defender was, him or Mutombo or Robinson, but without a doubt he was the most versatile big man back then with those steal and block averages, next best was Robinson of course.

Russell is overrated anyway... He never faced the quality of bigmen that Hakeem have defended throughout his career
@DJVijilante
@DJVijilante 3 жыл бұрын
M01535 Totally agree. Russell was just a polished speaker and knew what to say. He also was the winningest Center and played well against Will. Since his offense wasn’t good - never shot above 50% and his FT shooting was only above 60% twice, they had to boast him about something. I agree he was great at defense, but I wonder how he would fair against Robinson or Rodman. Robinson I think was also not only a great defender, but great player. He gets a lot of flack because of his 1995 playoff battle against Hakeem and the fact he didn’t win the big one without Duncan. Pre-injury Robinson was a beast on both sides of the court. Look at his games and stats. Also, Wilt could have been even said to be maybe as great defender as Russell.
@localneo-graphic4647
@localneo-graphic4647 2 жыл бұрын
Disagree, and shitting on Russell is kind of ridiculous. There were only 8 team back then, and bench players were treated like disposable trash, except MAYBE the 6th man. That's 40, maybe 50 RELEVANT players instead of 250-300 like we have today. The 'milkmen' he played against were guys who only played when starters were gassed or hurt, the concept of 'rotations' barely existed. Besides, there was no 3 point line back then, so Russell got to DOMINATE the paint. I've watched his highlights, he had about the same height and length as Hakeem, but he could jump through the fucking roof. I've seen Hakeem get to almost 10 ft with his head, Russell's was eye level. He was also more explosive of the floor, and had defensive IQ that was DECADES ahead of his time. It's not often you can talk about a center that's more athletic with bigger defensive IQ than Hakeem, but Russell was. The game was SO much different back then I can't even describe it, but Russell would be all-time status if he played today. GOAT rim protection, defensive IQ, quick enough to handle switches and lockdown guards, and then he'd be BETTER on offense. Even if he can't shoot, with the floor spacing and modern style he'd be a GOAT level roll man and lob threat. I say this a diehard Rockets fan, but as far as defense, Russell was just better in almost every way. It's not a coincidence he went 11-12, and that his team never faltered even when his 'legendary' supporting cast got injured. Only when Russell got injured (once) did the Celtics suck. He had some really great SCORING performances too when his team needed him, but they just don't look that impressive because Wilt existed. Russell had that Jimmy Butler 'whatever it takes' mentality, but as you said, was a better speaker. That also made him the GOAT leader. You can still argue who is the better player, since Hakeem could manufacture offense on command. Being the 2nd best defender all-time is not slander, and if you include his offensive game, he's probably the ONLY player who could legit contend exclusively with role players, holding down both ends of the court. Who else could do that? Not LeBron, not Jordan, not Bill Russell. Only other player is Wilt, but Wilt couldn't fucking hit free throws and had a toxic mentality that made his team worse.

Hakeem Olajuwon's to Defense in basketball, what Lawrence Taylor was to Defense in the NFL. They were both all over the place with high motors, and went many places which "traditional", similar players did not. They both made every ball handler nervous to find those defensive stoppers on a moments notice, and kept offensive coaches up at night in sweats building schemes to avoid them. Nonetheless, though they were both very innovative with great impact in their respective sports. They're, still other Old Timers (Dick Butkus; Bill Russell, etc.) who many people compare them to, felt they built their legacies upon. It's like a Modern/Previous Era comparison. Either way: Olajuwon and Taylor, are at worst the #2 Defensive players in their professional sports league's respective histories!
