Never understand why he’s not spoken of more as a modern drum standard in prog metal. His approach is so unique. He plays almost like a percussion ensemble rather than a kit player.

Definitly a criminally underrated underappreciated drummer in all of music not just this genre. He should be mentioned alongside big names in prog/djent/metal like Blake Richardson and Matt garstka and Matt halpern. His drum parts are so unique and creative. He’s not the best or most skilled or most technical compared to someone like garstka but he can write and create as good or better than any of them. His drum parts are literally soooo outside the box thinking that 99.99999999 percent of drummers would never think to write parts he writes and has some of the coolest accented parts matching the riffs and runs the guitars are doing.

Ray is right up there with the best. He is not underrated, just not known as much as he deserves. His drumming is so inspiring. I saw them on February 28th in Montreal, 2 weeks before everything has shut down. We had 3 bands that night: The Contortionist, Haken and Devin Townsend: It was Epic!

It took me a while to love this song, though I don't understand why. This song and the rest of the album is still my number one. Everything that Haken has released, from Aquarius to Affinity is simply amazing. Streams, Visions, Pareidolia, 1985 and Lapse will always be my top5, but all the songs they have written are brilliant. This band gave me a new perspective on song writing.
@renzo39396 жыл бұрын
really?? It´s interesting to see that someone would like streams that much since i thought it was the 2nd worse song from aquarius... Interesting ...

Imo, streams is one of the best songs in Aquarius

Box Agreed, Streams is even one of the best Haken songs in general, especially because of the sick and unexpected doomy growl part in the middle.

Ray and Ross both performing Flawlessly one of their best song... amazing, hope we can get a DVD soon! Nice to see Haken and Ray' popularity growing as it should be! Haken is the best in prog right now IMO, and Ray Hearne of of the best prog drummers of our time!

He doesn't always is out of tune or out of time. He is definitely inconsistent, but to be honest he has made amazing progress since Aquarius. I saw them back in August and Ross was top notch. One of the best show I have seen in a while.

to see this live would be wow... like dream theater or porcupine tree. an active drummer just adds to that oomf. they are so tight as well, and a lot of bands are that are making it, but to play this live is just a daunting experience if you aren't really good.

Well, it's not. Cannot really see every hit and element 'cause camera moving too much. Cymbals and fills section zoomed too much in. If you want to keep some kind of atmosphere when filming please don't swing back and forth by the side, rather go backside of drummer to have the whole set visible.

Ray does a great job! But the micing/mixing on the cymbals is strange in my opinion. It has nearly no sustain and is far too dry. Does it have anything to do with the venue and the sound of the rest of the band? Was it an active decision? I am not a professional sound-engineer, but man he beat the crap out of these huge crashes and they cut out like dry Chinas.

I’m with you - it’s an interesting point. From my perspective, I don’t find most drummers too entertaining to watch though I love to listen to their drumming, and I put him in this category. There are a couple drummers that stand out to watch: Neal Peart and Mike Portnoy both are fabulously entertaining. I can’t quite say why but I could watch them for hours, especially Peart.

Ross wavers a bit, but it's not that bad, especially considering The Architect was the encore when I saw them live, so they'd been absolutely ripping for 2 hours already
@SmevMev7 жыл бұрын
Genuinely, Ross was great live, as were the rest of the band. The classic choice for shit live vocals is Mastodon, which is understandable, given none of them are trained singers and they're having to hold down complex guitar parts at the same time, but they've had some real disasters
@heaththedrummer6667 жыл бұрын
SmevMev Mastodon has been amazing all three times I've seen them. But they always sound bad on live recordings. I've stopped basing my opinions of metal vocals off videos. Because many metal bands just sound terrible on videos. Like this guy was miserable just now, but I'm sure it sounded much better and on pitch live. There is something about playing live shows where you tune your voice to the atmosphere of the room. And that atmosphere doesn't come through on video.
@SpiderShlongGaming7 жыл бұрын
@SmevMev it really is pretty bad. I stopped listening right at 2:02...
@SmevMev7 жыл бұрын
I've only seen Mastodon live once, but it was a great show, even with occasional vocal slips. You're definitely right that there's something about being at the show which tends to smooth out the imperfections. +SpiderShlongGaming Don't let it stop you from going to catch them live, if you get the chance - I didn't enjoy this recording much either, but it's not the same as seeing them in person. Can't promise Ross will be pitch-perfect, but you'll probably still enjoy it
