I'm old enough to remember game 7 of the series between the Knicks and Bullets in '71. When Bill Bradley missed that shot, I have never heard a crowd go quiet like that Madison Square Garden crowd when that game ended. Even watching it on KOMO Channel 4 from Seattle, you could tell the sellout crowd was just stunned by what had just happened.

worst knick loss in that run from 1968-1974! remember reed played with a bad shoulder from a first round collision with former knick walt bellamy.

@@impassable First and only time I cried was that loss. 8 year old me was looking to a Knicks Bucks final. Knicks had their number. Heartbreaking loss.

See they mentioned Reed hurting his shoulder and it ruined his ability to shoot. He was over a 50% shooter in the playoffs prior to the 1971 Playoffs and that year could only shoot 41%. This is why the Knicks lost to the Bullets in 7 in round 2.

Reed was injured all of the 1971 playoffs with a bad left shoulder that destroyed his ability to shoot. He ran into Walt Bellamy against the Hawks and injured his shoulder. This is the only reason the Bullets defeated the Knicks. Remember in 6 series from 1969 to 1974, the Knicks won 5. The Bucks were easily defeated by the Knicks in 1970 and played the Bullets in 1971 for the NBA title. It was Alcindor/Jabbar's only title without Magic Johnson. Alcindor/Jabbar was 6 and 15 against Willis Reed from 1969 to 74 despite the Bucks winning 304 to the Knicks 266. A healthy Reed and the Bucks don't win in 1971 and Reed and the Knicks win 5-6 NBA titles if he had been healthy like Russell to 35 or Wilt to 36. Reed only played in 99 games his last three seasons! He retired at age 31 after trying to play 11 playoff games in 1974 averaging 12 minutes and 3.4 points and 2 rebounds. BTW, Reed was 6 feet 8 and a half, not 6 feet 11. That was nuts!

Great highlights, even those old commercials! The Knicks and the Bullets had some real battles back then. Its interesting to see Earl Monroe and Walt Frazier going at each other. They were nemeses before they became long time teammates.

Watched the ABC broadcast gm. 7 Knicks/Bullets...Schenkel & Twyman (good team) Me....Knicks fan.....on this night had an uncomfortable feeling most of the game (watched standing up) it was a tough foul laden contest, gritty. Remember Schenkel "And the Knicks are dethroned". Read the next day some of the Garden crowd sat stunned in silence for 20 minutes. Read the account in Harvey Araton`s "When The Garden was Eden". In the game Knicks had only 6 bench points (Stallworth). Bullets hung in the whole series & deserved to win. Monroe & Unseld were great but i felt Fred Carter was the difference. Posting this 50 yrs to the day, april 19 `71.

They acquired Lucas because Reed was out with a bad left knee only playing 11 games. Lucas was forced to play in the pivot in 1971/72 because there was no Willis. They went to the finals but lost to the Lakers.

Willis Reed wasn’t on the court at the end of the game. He started , played a few minutes, hit 2 shots and was removed. It was a wire to wire blowout.

Yes a disappointing loss. Willis injured in Atlanta series courtesy of the big clod Walt Bellamy. I remember game 7 and just didn’t have a good feeling. ABC had Jack Twyman situated behind the Baltimore bench to further mush and aggravate Knick fans.

No you wouldn’t have dominated in the 70s, because you wouldn’t have been able to palm, carry, or travel as is routine in today’s game; plus they would push you from sideline to sideline by legally hard-hand-checking/ holding onto you. I could go on.

Typical era bias. You can't compare yourself with these players. Not only because of the rule changes mentioned in the comment above. If you had grown up in the 50s and 60s like these guys, you would not have been as athletic as you are today. Diet, training, conditioning have all tremendously changed. Inversely, if those guys would be playing today, they would be faster, stronger, etc... You simply can't compare eras.

@@vicepresidentmikepence889 you think Willis Reed Dave Debusschere Bill Bradley etc would struggle to shoot the 3? You can see debusschere shooting from 25 foot range in the 70s fool
