okay, so, MADDIE. my theory is that maddie had always had innate magical abilities, but when she was younger, they were very weak. she was always very impatient, and she attempted a high-level spell that ended up going awry and killing one of her sisters. she had heard of an axolotl god, who she tried (and succeeded) in communicating with through lucid dreaming. The axolotls denies her request to revive her sister, saying that to reverse death is unnatural, and it is best to let nature take it's course. Maddie, of course, won't stand for this. shortly before waking up, she sees bill cipher in the axolotl mindscape, who tells her that he will make a deal with her and bring back her sister. Maddie leaves the mindscape of the axolotl, and tries to summon bill cipher, who says that he has been stuck with the axolotl for 500 years, and will revive maddie's sister in exchange for partial control over her body. He also mentions that, as he is a powerful magical entity, that having his presence in her mind will heighten her magical abilities. She accepts. Notice that none of the members of maddie's family have yellow slit eyes. Maddie's covered eye is normal, as the real maddie still has partial control over her body. During the night, and at certain instances like when she's feeling a strong emotion, bill may take over. Maddie has learned to work with the possession, but her deepest fear is that something will happen to her younger siblings due to her negligence.
