In this fifty-first video in the new series on G.W.F. Hegel's great early work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, I read and comment on paragraphs 129, 130, and 131 of the text, concluding our study of the second portion of the section "Consciousness," i.e "Perception: Or the Thing and Deception".
Hegel now brings the section to a close, noting that the interplay between sense-perception and the universal have revealed opposition within the very object of consciousness itself, a split between the unified One and the Also of relation with others. Perception now grasps the object as it is in itself, as a universal, but as for-something, for the Understanding or Intellect.
Perception lapses into a kind of sophistry when it attempts to do away with the opposition within the object of perception, focusing on the different aspects without acknowledging their contradiction. This sophistry itself gives way to a "sound common sense" which remains unable to grasp more than essences as abstractions. While common sense and sophistry reveal themselves, when pushed to their limits, as engaging with untruth, Philosophy deals with the concrete determinate content, aiming at grasping their truth in their dynamic relations with consciousness.
In this video series, I will be working through the entire Phenomenology, paragraph by paragraph -- for each one, first reading the paragraph, and then commenting on what Hegel is doing, referencing, discussing, etc. in that paragraph.
This series is designed to provide an innovative digital resource that will assist students, lifelong learners, professionals, and even other philosophers in studying this classic work by Hegel for generations to come. With this lecture, we finish the section "Perception" -- now we are ready to move into the dizzying dialectics of "Force and the Understanding" (by the way, since we've passed the second milestone for the Patreon campaign for this Half-Hour Hegel project, we're now going to be producing 6 of these videos each month -- which means that we'll have the entire Phenomenology covered in about another 3 years!)

Thank you very much Mr. Sadler. These vids are a true blessing to get to grips with the for me impenetrability of some of these passages!

I very much appreciate these videos. A) There is NO way I would've understood the vast majority of Hegel without them. B) They have allowed me to understand other texts on Hegel. For example, I'm reading Walter Kaufmann's short book translating the Introduction with Commentary. Had I read Kaufmann's translation cold, most of his commentary would have gone over my head. After these videos and engaging directly with the text for a few months I feel I grasped a lot of it. Hegel feels a lot like using a whetstone on your mind. The more passes the sharper it gets, the clearer the text is. So, thank you a ton for all the work on these Greg.

I had the same thing happen, which is what I was hoping would happen. Now The Philosophy of Right is way easier to grasp than before I saw these videos. Either Hegel or the translators have a mode of expression that I have to determine how to absorb or I get just static. Also, I kept in mind that this would be just one person's approach to understanding these words, which seems to be what the words themselves are telling us. Excellent work and enjoying the ride so far as well as yourself.

Great lectures- and "improbus labor" is indeed required! "Also", I liked when you said of common sense: "... a shop clerk that cannot give you the right product..."

Dear Mr. Sadler, Thank you so much for these videos, tackling such a difficult work of tought. We can only admire your passion to make it clear, logical, and sensefull for those who struggle with it (it is my case). I have a precise question : at 17/40, when you make sense of that contradictory unity beetween Being-for-Self and Not-Being-For Self, does that mean (in the very terms) that Being for self simultaneously is Being for an other ? That Singularity is at the very same time being-universal (batch of properties) ? Does Hegel mean Being for an other when he specifies "Not-being for self " ? In that case, the speculative unity of the unconditionned universal, as the reversible unity of singularity and universality becomes clear towards the move to understanding. If you see that comment, I would be so grateful ! From France

So if we haven't performed all the acrobatics involved up to this point with each item around us, could it be said that we haven't yet understood? "not for each item" maybe said. But if not, then how do we know that the item we chose to ignore isn't the one that will make or break our situation? I expect these issues will be covered under the "reason" or "spirit" sections. Something to guide us as to which items we need to invest all these acrobatics in. Otherwise we would run out of time even give thousand year lifespans.

You know, you should be reading the text, and then going to these videos. These are just a commentary, not a substitute for actually reading ahead in the text itself. And you should expect to have to read and reread multiple times. Understanding is not something that happens all and once and then is fixed for good

Especially with my mind that has a very high falloff rate. I had planned on reading further in once I'm sure I'm not just guessing at the meaning. Rereading later goes without saying, it's too good not to reread.

In what sense is the piece of chalk opposed to chalkiness? IS it like I am chalk..no IM chalk or something else?
@2tehnik
@2tehnik 4 жыл бұрын
I think in that there is a necessary unity of the two while there also being a total opposition. The chalk is not the chalkness but the chalk necessarily has to contain the chalkness (and I guess the chalkness is somehow conveyed through the chalk).
