beta half-life 2 was also highly flawed and was, objectively, over-the-top with it's atmosphere. i feel like retail half-life 2 pulls off the dystopian feeling in a much more subtle way, rather than shoving it in your face

I think Valve made a mistake when they decided to completely change everything in the final release, all because of a leak. There are so many elements of the beta that would make the final product so much better.

Yeah but playing in this dark hopeless world and atmosphere would become so draining and boring after a while. The retail hl2 has a good mix of dark dystopian but also fun, more happy moments

I think Americans perceive Half Life 2 darker because they themselves did not live in such neighborhoods, I noticed that Russians are not as bothered by this game as Americans! @@Zrozenskyi Nah bro, I live in Lithuania which has the same architecture to HL2 and I can say with confidence that retail HL2 is way darker than HL1. HL1 some dark moments, but it also had a lot comedic moments, like scientists being eaten by zombies and turning into gibs, which is kinda funny, while HL2 is much more atmospheric and serious, there's almost no comedy if any at all.

@@thiccjerry5232 Half Life 2 is definitely dark. but in Half Life 1 you constantly have to climb through dark ventilation, and when a headcrab jumps in the ventilation, then it’s actually horror. The darkest game in the Half Life series is Half Life episode 1 because it's very dark there

Don't know the footage in this video but you should research Raising The Bar: Redux and Dark Interval. They're two fantastic half-life 2 beta restoration projects (Dark Interval no longer seems to get updates very often if at all, but RTBR gets maybe two every year)
