@@ManyATrueNerd hey some advice if you reload when you still have a bullet in the chamber then you don't have to pull back on the gun. In theory the gun could be loaded with 11 bullets, 10 in the magazine and one of the chamber I believe. Also it's called a magazine not a clip, a clip is what you use to load a magazine with. I'm not sure how it works in this game but if you eject a bullet you might be able to push the bullet back into the magazine. Also if you drop a magazine that still has bullets in it then you should pick them back up and store them. Source - very limited experience with guns

Jon please. A magazine is like a container for ammo that you insert into a gun. A clip is basically a strip of metal that holds ammo together that is thrown away after you load the weapon. It is not inserted and left in (most of the time). Google 'Ammo clip' and you will realize the difference is pretty simple to see and they are vastly different. I believe in you Jon. Totally missed the eye that would get formed if he had opened the cage and shown him which configuration on the wall to use. Luckily he got the right one but it was just by chance. Also, having Jon with me in the apocalypse we would be dead and I would have no ammo.

Walk into the centre, turn around, open the cage, let the cardboard out, it forms an eye (similar to the one in the hallway earlier), stand on the platform and look through the eye. The grid combination you see in the iris is the one to use.

How a handgun works: When you load a gun it needs to chamber the round, as in the round needs to enter the chamber where a striker pin can hit the button on the back of the bullet casing to make it fire. To chamber a round in a handgun you have to pull back the slide, this makes a little bullet sized pocket appear above the magazine which contains the remaining bullets. The magazine's built in spring pushes the next bullet in line up, which ejects the spent casing above it(or a bullet that hasn't been fired) and the next bullet is pushed up into the pocket. When you let go of the slide, the bullet is pushed by the slide into the chamber, making it ready to be fired. Since the pistol is semi-automatic, when you press the trigger, the force of the bullet being fired pushes the slide backwards so another bullet can be chambered, this ejects the casing and you are ready to fire immediately after.

Important note to add to this as Jon made this mistake a few times: If there's already a round chambered when you insert a new magazine, you don't actually have to pull the slide back to chamber a new round. It just wastes a round. Less important note for the pedant in me: There's a difference between a bullet an a round. The bullet is specifically the projectile that comes out of the gun, but the whole package that you put into the gun (including bullet, powder, jacket/shell/case, and primer) is usually (and more properly) called a round or cartridge. Also you got the order of operations on spent case extraction/round chambering backwards. When the slide is pulled back, the extractor ejects the spent case (or, as you observed, round) by pulling on the rim around the bottom of the case, then the slide comes back forward pushing the new round into the chamber, and, finally, the spring in the magazine pushes a new round up and into the space left by the previous round.

I began the game using the broom stick as my main weapon. When the MPs found me in the elevator, I gave them a wack with the broom. When I needed the zombie out of my way, the broom pulled him out mess free. The broom was my best friend. Unfortunately, while Alyx can smash crates with bare strength, she cannot use a rock or something on a headcrab. This game really needs a melee weapon.

Just chiming in as an Index owner, the finger tracking and stuff in this game is pretty damn cool. You can squeeze pop (soda) cans! Bar that and just generally being able to move your fingers on their own though (which never gets old,) you can't actually move your fingers while you hold things :( Ooh, as I was writing this you just got to the window writing which has reminded me that the writing is much more natural with the index controllers, as you don't have to hold the trigger to hold you just... hold your hand closed like you would with a real pen. VR is insane stuff, this game is a MASTERPIECE (have finished it) and if you don't do this normally, I highly recommend you finish it on your own time (or maybe make a small series?)

Its a MAGAZINE, Jon, not a clip! LOL Anyway, most semiautomatic pistols lock the slide (the top part of a pistol) back after the last round has been fired by engaging a catch. Once a new magazine has been inserted, a round still has to be stripped off the top of the magazine and chambered. This is done automatically via the recoil of the gun, except for when it locks open after the last round. By either hitting the slide release, or by pulling the slide backwards, the catch is disengaged, allowing the recoil spring to force the slide forward, chambering a round. If you pull the slide back with a round in the chamber, the chambered round will be ejected. You are essentially manually cycling the action. This is actually how firearms are cleared and rendered safe for most storage situations. Also, how long until the Vibe is able to simulate recoil and Jon breaks his wrist holding a gun like that? There's a reason they're held vertically: so they can both cycle properly and NOT break the shooter's wrist. Oh, and the sights are on top as well... And the aim assist is cranked up to 11- 11,000 that is. Talk about poor sight alignment. Then again, I can barely hit a 100yrd rifle target at 50 yards with a handgun, so its probably a good decision by Valve. Edit: I take it back. The advantage of a reflex sight is the lack of paralax. The "dot" will appear to move around the sight so as to remain above a single point (assuming you don't point the gun somewhere else.) Geometrically, you need two points to form a line, hence iron sights having both a front and rear sight. Getting these aligned correctly takes time. A reflex sight gets around this by using a hologram focused at infinity. You normally have to line up the front sight, the rear sight, and the target. With reflex sights, its a simple case of place dot on target and pull trigger. (for short range, anyway...) Also, I'd second anyone who want to suggest a full play through.

This is amazing. I remember my first attempt to play the original half life in college. I eventually stopped because it got too scary for me. I only finished it and played through HL2 much, much later. I can only imagine how it feels in VR. I hope to try this game out, but hope it doesn’t take me another 15-20 years to stomach it!

As a huge HL fan myself since the original, I have to say the non-VR versions were never all too scary to me. This... though.... this is one of the scariest and most awesome (in its true meaning) experienced I've ever had. When that first Strider shows up is the only time I think I've ever had a legitimate fight or flight reflex trigger while playing a game. It's just insane how well this game tricks your brain. I really hope you get to experience it soon!

You know, my habit of playing games really methodically made me only get jumped twice in this game - once by an armoured headcrab, and once by a headcrab crawling out of a toilet, so I feel I really missed out on the "run and scream" aspect of the game.
