This part of the game is always so unsettling everytime I replay it or watch it on youtube. The growl of the AMS as the test begins, you start to picture the entire world in those last few moments, what everyone was doing at the time. Families, people at the movie theater, or the mall or just having a normal day at work, all that would immediately come to a gloomy end when the crystal was brought into contact with the AMS. I've always wondered, what's actually SUPPOSED to happen? They shoot a big laser at an alien crystal, for what purpose? And how does that somehow accidentally allow them to teleport to earth?
@sammylambson54535 жыл бұрын
It's an analyzer, the beams are an analyzer, But when the alien crystal goes in it becomes unstable, as you can hear from the guy talking to you at the beginning "Its the purest sample we've seen yet" "And potentially the most unstable" Which causes the resonance cascade scenario
@kylefinn5301 Жыл бұрын
The crystal is partly composed of some sort of exotic matter, so they agitate the sample with the beam to observe its effects on space-time to see if it can be used for teleportation. The AMS was overclocked a tiny bit and the crystal was extremely pure and unstable, so when it got inserted, it got agitated too much and tore a hole in space time between earth and Xen

G-Man and his employers were the ones who caused all this, right? From the events of both games, it's clear that the Xen beings and the Combine are enemies of the Employers. The Resonance Cascade both opened a portal to Xen and called the Combine to Earth; I don't think that's a coincidence. For that reason, I think I can deduce a couple of reasons why the Employers caused the Cascade in the first place. a). To have someone else deal with Xen and/or the Combine b). To lure the Combine someplace they can be finished off in one fell swoop--putting Earth in the crossfire of whatever their plans might be The latter reason could be the reason why in Alyx, G-Man says that getting the Combine off Earth would be too large a 'push'--not because he can't do it, but because it would go against the interests of his employers. If the Combine are their enemies, they should be glad to screw them over any way they can; unless, of course, they need them on Earth for some reason. I assume they mean to wipe out the Combine by wiping out Earth somehow. This could also be why G-Man is so intent on 'hiring' people--he doesn't want all the talent he's finding on Earth to go to waste, certainly. Please keep in mind that I have never played a Half-Life game, so if any of this is blatantly wrong, there's your answer.
