I believe irifle stands for “incendiary rifle” as in the beta, there was a weapon that was basically the ar2 called the incendiary rifle hat was axed from the game

it doesn't stand for 'Impulse rifle', Its only ever called the 'Pulse Rifle' or 'AR2'. 'Irifle' stands for "Incendiary Rifle" from the Half Life 2 Beta, as the model used for the weapon was the AR2's model, the name was a leftover from the beta version of the weapon.

I remember seeing the I-Rifle in action in one of the E3 2003 demos. I guess Valve figured it would be more versatile as the OSIPR in the final release.

Finally! Someone who's noticed this, it has to be an early pulse rifle model, the ar1. Then by the time of hl2, they've since upgraded to the ar2 and made them standard issue for squad leaders and elites.

I love love love the new guns in Half-Life Alyx. One of the first things I did was open up the model viewer to look at all the new and shiny weapons combine soldiers used

I thought that the rifle in HL:A were the same in HL2 but without the "extended magazine upgrade". As you notice in HL2 the AR2 reloads automatically and the ammo is stored in what i call a magazine belt attached to the weapon, similar to the extended magazine upgrade for the smg in HLA. That made me believe that the weapon was the same but without that upgrade, probably because the upgrade was either in a prototype phase or was just too expensive for the time, but became more accesible when gordon arrived city 17

No its an AR1, AR2 is a more advanced riffle with a built in pulse charge, then the AR3 is a mounted turret seen in HL2 Cannals and Sand Traps chapters. They are also seen in the apocalyptic City 17 in oyur escape durring episode 1, and lastly hwen you are sealing the silo doors you have to use an AR3 to hold off advancing combine soldiers and elites.

Its probably a prototype version if the AR2, since HL:A is 5 years ago from HL2.

It does not lack any of that. The dark energy launcher is still there. That's what the underbarrel attachment is. The Combine just don't use it, probably for the same reason the Chargers doesn't use the Tau Cannon attachment on their shotguns. It would be a bit overwhelming to deal with in VR. The autoloader is also still there, the magazine is just smaller.

@@paintball_2 Oh come on, the Combine named their weapons based off of the Korean weapon designation. Literally AR2 is named after K2, and both are basically standard issue assault rifles.

honestly I'd say that the weapons and designs in HL:Alyx are just redesigned and updates to the weapon rosters back in HL2. i mean....we had an MP7 that could fire a grenade for some reason, classic Spas12 shotgun that could fire 2 rounds and other stuff. The Pulse Rifle remained the same but I always found it silly that for an...infantry-issued weapon, it always carried around a gigantic "drum" mag. I like the Alyx weapons more, they look more like they came from the Combine, and the Pulse Rifle looks more...compact and infantry-y with smaller "magazine" profile. I'd like to think the Pulse SMG and Heavy Shotgun from Alyx are just redesigns of the SMG and SHotgun from HL2.

Given how long it’s been since HL2, as well as how that last model was quickly salvaged for the pulse rifle, this gun is probably Valve’s redesign of the AR2. It makes sense to me, not only in the context of its creation, but also the fact they’ve named it after the same exact version from HL2, implying they are one in the same.

I wish we could have seen special squads of just a combine ordinal (Captain) and just combine grunts equipment with AR 1s just throw on a different symbol, patch, or change the uniform color and call them a combine rifle men with the squad getting rid of the heavy and suporesser for balancing

No, the AR-1 is a Kalash variants, most likely an AKM, although In case if city 17 is in Bosnia or Albania, it would likely be a Chinese version of a local version. Either way this AR-2 look better than the one in HL2.

I'm not sure what the AR1 might be canonically, but I know that in the Half Life 2 leaked betas, AR1 referred to a Kalashnikov assault rifle. In fact, the name AR1 simply means "Assault Rifle 1", meaning it is the first assault rifle that the player acquires. AR2 would be the second assault rifle. The names were simply code, and I don't think they initially intended it to be taken as the literal names of the weapons, but it seems that Half Life 2 Episode 2 canonised the name, as a rebel explicitly refers to the Pulse Rifle as an AR2. My best guess is that the weapon in Half Life Alyx is just a variant of the AR2 or possibly even a retcon design, as I would imagine that an AR1 would be a drastically different weapon platform.
