That is really hard graft. No cotton here, but I remember pitching hay bales and straw bales up onto the trailer with a pitchfork. If you've not seen it, think "slow motion pole vaulting". At less than five feet tall, and weighing about sixty pounds ( if I was carrying thirty pounds of hay), it was hard work.

@southernfarmer3 жыл бұрын
Michael Nichols often times we do, but if there are any muddy spots, drains, rough spots of any kind to cross we go ahead and try not to carry it through them or across them with the picker. Sometimes we would end up on the opposite end at which the bales were being lined up, which would be counter productive. The spear tractor burns minimum fuel anyways. Not really a big deal if the have to go a few extra rounds a day

@@southernfarmer when I was a kid my dad bought a wrecked '67 Charger and the front part of the frame was bent. He went 100% redn*ck and tied a chain around it and to a tree out back. He would rev up the car, slam it in reverse, and get it going as fast as he could until the slack ran out. After about doing that ten times the frame was mostly straight and his nerves were mostly shot. He drove that car for 5 or 6 years. After that he consider himself to be a "Frame and Body Man". So, by that logic, you just need a little OJT to get your John Deere body work certification. LOL. I wish we had camera phones back then to film some of the other crazy stuff he did.

@@southernfarmer Can I ask why you drop bales before you reach the headlands when the following bale will not be completed before you reach the headlands.
@southernfarmer3 жыл бұрын
Adrian Chetwynd many times we get as close as we can to the headland we intend to store the modules at, but many times we are going the opposite direction so that’s as close as we will be with that bale before turning. Also, if there is any thing at all on the edge of the field where you plan to turn and head back you are very limited on turning room with a bale on the handler. Another reason to drop them at “random” might be there may be a drain or mud hole to cross where the handler could potentially drape, or the picker it’s self might strain to the point of losing power.... which is never good, and just another avoidable problem.
