Totally missed what's going on in this one. The point of the song is it's post-breakup and he doesn't want her to know he's going crazy over her and still wants her. He wants people to tell her he's out there doing his own thing and enjoying life when the truth is he's not moved on.

The songs about him and his girl had been broken up for a little while and she knows he's crushed over it and can't get over her. The first verse is like asking her to tell their friends he's doin fine, good this if she has to then the second is bad stuff he's doin, but whatever she has to say don't tell her loves and misses her so bad it may cause their friends to worry about him. He has some if not the BEST songs writers in the entire music world! My highway, I ain't ready to quit, back in this cigarette and ask any old barstool just to name a few are masterfully written.
