Quick correction.America did not declare war with Germany. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour th US declared war on Japan, and as an alliance existed between Germany and Japan, Germany was obliged to support Japan and thus declared war on the United States.
@davidhimmelsbach557
@davidhimmelsbach557 2 жыл бұрын
There was no such alliance between Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. Rather, Adolf had an emotional moment -- and just did what came to him. Japan proceeded to stiff Adolf at every turn -- almost -- as when he begged them to attack Siberia -- or send the IJN into the Indian Ocean. Both actions would've had world shaking impacts.

@@davidhimmelsbach557 Take a look at the Tripartite Pact AKA The Berlin Pact. An agreement between Germany, Italy & Japan signed in Berlin Sept 27th 1940. It was a Military Alliance which was joined later by, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia & the Independent state of Croatia as well as Slovakia in that order. This alliance became known as the Axis Powers.
@randomobserver8168
@randomobserver8168 2 жыл бұрын
Germany declared war because Hitler saw what he foolishly thought an opportunity. The Tripartite Pact did not oblige any of its members to go to war unless another member were attacked by a party they were not already at war with, NOT if the member attacked someone else. Germany would have been obliged to assist with all political, economic and military means if the US had attacked Japan. Technically, Japan would have been obliged to assist Germany if the USSR had attacked it. I'm not so sure Japan would have lived up to that commitment the way Germany did. That's a compliment to Japan, whose strategy was otherwise pretty dumb. Since Germany was the aggressor against Russia, and Japan the aggressor against the US, the Tripartite Pact only applied as far as its general clauses about who had which spheres of influence. That the Germans and Japanese made an extremely half-baked attempt to fight a common war was gravy, not the main course. Phrasing treaties like that, creating opt outs if a party were the aggressor, was a common way to keep one's commitments to one's allies under control and retain some discretion. Pre WW1, too. Technically Germany had to come to Austria's aid because the Russians had mobilized against Austria, they did NOT have to assist Austria's invasion of Serbia. Evasive phrases like "political, economic and military means" are common too. Surprising how often "all military means" can be interpreted as military assistance short of war. Though the Tripartite Pact's phrasing is stronger than some.

On December 11, 1941, the United States Congress declared war on Germany, hours after Germany declared war on the United States after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan. The vote was 88-0 in the Senate and 393-0 in the House.

As a point of historical accuracy, the maple leaf flag shown in the video was not Canada's flag during the war years. It was changed in the 1960's from the one with Union Jack in the corner and a crest with bunch of other stuff like smaller maple leaves and a fleur de lis.

Avey Field (WA/BC) and Piney Pinecreek (MN/MAN) are the only airports that still cross the border, and only Piney Pinecreek seems to be some place where you could really land and then choose which country to enter. At Avey Field, the likely spot where the planes were moved into Canada has been blocked off The Canadian side of Coutts/Ross airport seems to survive as lines of trees where the taxiways and apron used to be, but the American side has been plowed flat. A more accurate title for this video is "Why so many Airport Runways used to cross the US-Canada Border."

Another slightly less well-known reason the US didn't get involved was the supporters and members of the party from Germany in the 30s. Like the Madison Square Garden rally.
@Lazydino59
@Lazydino59 2 жыл бұрын
Another reason was the atrocities committed by the nazi party were not really discovered until the late 30s or early 40s. Concentration camps were not internationally known and mostly kept in-house on a need to know basis. Thus the nazis were seen more as power-hungry guys than the monsters they were made out to be since then. This was also a critical turning point leading to America wanting to go to war with germany if i remember correctly

My mother was from Toronto. Canadians are fiercely independent, or so they say, yet they vacation here, have business here, freely cross the border and return (with proper ID), and come to our aid in times of war. They have been loyal friends, in general, 2nd only to Australia. It would be nice to have Canada as a state (never happen) but oh well.

I've always wondered by Gold Coast airport in Australia is mostly in the state of Queensland and partially in the state of New South Wales? It seems like a beaurocratic nightmare to have an aircraft taxiing between two different states
@liam6nugget
@liam6nugget 2 жыл бұрын
It’s just a space issue on two fronts Front 1: there isn’t much land suitable for an airport on the Gold Coast (it’s either too hilly or too swampy, and the too swampy bit is now too housing estatey) Front 2: when they built the Coolangatta airport, it was initially all in Queensland, but the arrival of the jet age meant the runway needed to be extended. They couldn’t go north due to high ground, private property and the Pacific Highway being in the way, so the runway was extended south across the border. Fun fact: this means you can land in a different time zone to what the terminal half the year because NSW has daylight saving

@@gotham61 ... I hadn't really paid attention to that so good to know. I did notice the NY State Police sit by that last exit for the parkway at the line because Ct allows smaller commercial trucks on the Merrit and NY does not.
