Well done on mentioning the raised text, a commonly overlooked security feature. I was first told about that by a Bank of England employee some decades ago; and to this day it remains the most effective, discrete, and quick method to check the notes you have been given (as change in a shop, at a bank counter, or from a cash point).

Several of the Scottish banks, including The Royal Bank of Scotland, issue £100 banknotes. A good nickname would be "ton note" I suppose! Its surprising, really, that with the price of everything nowadays that £50 and indeed £100 notes are not much more common in regular circulation. Unless its a big store or supermarket, shops generally don't like them. Its weird, because the Adam Smith £20 note was far more likely to be a dud/faked than a large denomination note.

Sounds a lot like the American $1000 note. We do have a $100 dollar note that used quite a bit, but mostly $10’s and $20’s. There’s always been a mystery behind the 1000 dollar note and wether or not banks really use them to make money transferring easier.

I'm hoping £50 notes will become more widely used and accepted when they come out with the polymer versions, as the biggest reason most shops and services refuse to take them is fear of counterfeiting in a note that's high value and rarely seen. The polymer version's increased security should stop this being a problem, and equivalent denominations are present and widely used in most other currencies, making sterling a bit of an outlier in this regard.

More precisely 'England's and Wales's new £20 notes' as Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own banknotes. Bank of England notes are legal tender throughout the UK for sure, and are also readily accepted in places like the Channel Islands, The Isle of Man and Gibraltar, all of whom use the pound but have their own banknotes too. I very rarely get handed English £20 notes in Scotland, though English fivers and tenners are more common - the banks here usually remove them from circulation and return them to England, so it may be a while before I get to see this new note in the flesh.

Um, no. Technically only Bank of England notes with a face value of less than £5 are legal tender throughout the UK (Currency and Bank Notes Act, 1954). Since no such notes have been issued since the 1980s the point is moot. BofE notes are only legal tender in England & Wales.

Generally, Scottish notes can meet with a bit of resistance in some parts of England and Wales although by mutual agreements, all banks and post offices are supposed to accept them, even if the odd shopkeeper and pub in the South of England make a fuss. I think Northern Irish notes do meet with a lot of resistance outside Northern Ireland, though. Interestingly, Scottish banknotes can be quite difficult to exchange abroad for local currency. GWK, a Dutch bureau de change charged me a 5% premium over English pound sterling notes for accepting these notes a few years back.

frglee Living in Wales originally, and England for the last 40 years, it’s rare to get Scottish notes in your change (though I did find a Clydesdale polymer tenner in my wallet about a year ago after a visit to Sainsburys, which I hadn’t noticed when it was given to me, as it’s the same size and pretty much the same colour as a BofE one!), though I have tried to put quite a few into circulation on my return from Scottish holidays! I have only twice in my life even seen a Northern Irish note (and I’m 61) - once I saw a Bank of Ireland £20 in the till at WH Smith’s in Derby station, and I was once given a First Trust fiver in my change in Glasgow about 25 years ago... I remember seeing differential rates for Scottish notes in banks in Liechtenstein back in the 80s. I also have memories of the Grens Wissel Kantoor giving me two 250-guilder notes when I exchanged leftover Austrian Schillings when I arrived at Amsterdam Centraal after an overnighter from Vienna!
