Beware of holy stone tiny whoops the 210 and the 420. They are both awesome little drones up front. But the parts are almost impossible to find in the US if you break something. You can email them for instructions on how to buy parts direct from the Chinese Warehouse. But the prices are an absolute scam, $17 per battery, $12 per motor and they take weeks to arrive. If you know what you're doing you might be able to source similar generic motors elsewhere but I sent mine back before the return date once I saw those parts prices.

Hi there, i am getting into quads, i am looking for a cheap quad that will be very sporty/aerobatic to practise on. Note i just fly LOS, no FPV, so don't want a very small whoop or under 220mm. Can you or anyone tell me a current model that is extremely agile model please (almost like Angle/Acro)? Not bothered about the weight. Many thanks.
@driewiel11 ай бұрын
Why not get two? JJRC H36. $15-$20. No GPS, no optical flow, not even altitude hold. Can fly it in the house and crash it against the walls. Yes it's one of those tiny things. But REAL flying learning throttle. Then for outside something bigger. It's funny but there aren't too many left that don't have altitude hold and optical flow. And from $60 they almost all have GPS nowadays. But if you can turn off the GPS, on most you can, it will usually fly faster. Some models are faster than others. Aerobatics, well not really. Can't do loops/flips etc. Unless it's a really cheap toy. Of course you don't have to put the FPV goggles on. Can fly an FPV drone line of sight if aerobatics is your thing.

The Tello wins. But they are no longer 100$. In west europe on the dji site they are 115€ regular set and 169€ boost combo. However the 2nd hand ones in my country are cheap. And everything for them the xiaomi repeaters 4-5€ (i bought and use 2), t1s wired controller 10€, the props on ebay a few euros etc... Awesome drones. I still own and fly 3 of them. And @ retailer in my city the top oem covers all 3 colours 6€.

I'm new to drones, but it appears to me as an engineer that after brushless motors, the next feature should be GPS. That enables follow me, circle around, one button return to home... What do you think of Temu, which has those features for far less, for example their low end GPS drown is about $75. They have a wide selection, too. I'm happy with other non-drone electronics from Banggood, such as microcomputers and power supplies and audio amps... But my main question is the order of features: Is it brushless, GPS, and then obstacle avoidance, and then at least two gymbaled camera or one gymbal plus a separate down camera? I'd love to know what I'm leaving out that may be even more important. Thanks!
@HalfChrome10 ай бұрын
It matters what is important. A camera on a three axis gimbal generally means the drone is decent.
@conorstewart22148 ай бұрын
GPS alone does not enable following or circling modes. Pretty much any of the drones you see with those modes do so using the camera and computer vision. GPS alone is only good for return to home, waypoints or tracking where the drone is and pretty much no cheap drone will have waypoint functionality. You also don’t really want to use following or circling modes without obstacle avoidance or you are limited to using them in large open spaces since obviously they won’t avoid obstacles. Also all obstacle avoidance isn’t equal, the quality and how well it can actually detect obstacles can vary a lot. I would not expect much from cheap obstacle avoidance and wouldn’t trust it either. Chances are cheap obstacle avoidance is just IR range sensors which does work but only for large obstacles and their field of view is narrow, compare that to DJI or skydio drones which use multiple wide angle cameras and complicated computer vision and the cheap systems just can’t compete and are just about useless. If you want a drone that can do object tracking, following, etc with obstacle avoidance then you need to go more expensive since these systems are more complicated, require a good bit of processing and are just more difficult to implement. Drones like DJI drones pretty much have powerful SBCs in them, some skydio drones used the Nvidia TX2 since that was needed for its obstacle avoidance and following/tracking features. If you are going for a cheap drone go for the most basic but well built, anything that claims to have GPS or obstacle avoidance probably isn’t very good and major compromises will have been made to add those things in and still keep it cheap. Edit: also gimballed cameras are good but again don’t expect much from cheap drones. Having two or more cameras isn’t important, just look at the DJI mini 4 pro, it only has one camera and that is perfectly fine. One high quality camera is better than two low quality cameras. Down cameras aren’t that useful, you are better with a gimbal that can look downwards, the fixed downwards facing cameras on most decent drones are for obstacle avoidance and optical flow which is what keeps the drone hovering in place not for filming or getting pictures, for that you tilt the gimbal downwards.

GPS guidance alone can be problematic on cheap drones and result in toilet bowling and erratic flying. I would just stick with optical flow and altitude hold stabilized on anything cheaper than the C-Fly Mini. Optical Flow is harder to mess up and when it's bad at least your fighting drift rather than an erratic flying drone. Seen many cheap GPS drones almost un-flyable. Even saw one that was unflyable on GPS mode but settled down on Optical Flow mode. The GPS in that case was a hindrance rather than an added feature.

@@HalfChrome The Tello is how old, 4 years? Just compare it to my L200. Brushless, GPS, SD card slot, 2-axis gimbal+EIS, 2k video, flies a km, under 250 grams, under $100. You have no idea what is for sale these days. All the drones you know you get for free from like overpriced Holy Clone. And if you really want to learn how to fly then get a $20 tiny whoop without GPS, or optical flow, or even altitude hold. Or a drone on which you can turn off GPS and without fragile gimbal? I've seen so many idiots crashing their $1000 DJI into a tree. I sold my Tello. Didn't use it often enough. It's not a 'real' drone. I have nothing against the Tello. It's a nice tool to get a selfie at places where other drones are too big or officially not legal. Like on a busy market square? And yes kids can learn to program. But it's not a drone for someone who wants to get an idea of what an expensive drone is like. Actually I don't need anything more than my L200. The video quality it plenty for YT.
