Hall & Oates have an instantly recognizable funky beat. They can make anything sound smooth. How wonderful to have this music to look back on and to share with the new generation. Loved your review Angela!

This isn't simply a woman who wants to have a good time. Hes talking about the type that will suck you dry of everything you have before moving on. A real sucubus.

Maneater is about the city of New York, believe it or not. They lived there a long time. Love them and saw them in concert back in the 80s. Daryl has one of the best voices in rock. Other faves include Sara Smile, Don't Hold Back Your Love, Some Things are Better Left Unsaid, Dreamtime (a Daryl solo effort), So Close Yet So Far Away, Everything Your Heart Desires

The thing I found interesting they wrote it to describe NYC lifestyle in the late 70’s & early 80’s which for those of us who grew up in the Tri-State describes it perfectly…

The song is metaphorical, they are actually singing about the record industry.

Their mix of new wave, soul and pop was formulated into a distinctive style that no one else could quite replicate. "Maneater", is a hard, sharp, memorable piece of pop music and is the duo operating at their absolute peak.

As a poster below said, the song is metaphorical, but it's not talking about the record industry. They had been based in Philadelphia since college and after talking it over they decided to move to NYC. John Oates has explained that while it is natural to assume the lyrics are about a woman, the song actually was originally written "about NYC in the ’80s. It's about greed, avarice, and spoiled riches. But we have it in the setting of a girl because it's more relatable. It's something that people can understand. That's what we do all of the time".
@Spacejockey4263 жыл бұрын
DayOne - there is a lyric in the first stanza the goes "Money's a matter, if you're in it for love, you ain't gonna get too far." This indicates a different kind of relationship situation going on in the song . . .

This song isn't even about a girl. It was written about New York City. He uses a woman as a symbol of the city.

In the same fashion of the 80s you should try a band from Norway named AHA an the song "Take on me" . You'll be mesmerized of the drawings coming to life and the colorful story going 9n with the song and the comics representation of the song... One of the best three songs of that decade!!

The kings of radio-friendly riffs from the late '70s and early '80s (meant in a good way. Top 40 often gets a bad rap, often tied to the industry shift around this time, when most pop radio stations nationwide in the US began mandating that DJs use playlists/power rotations of Top 40 hits. whereas before, DJs had more leeway to play what they wanted, when they wanted. I prefer the latter model, but good pop is good pop, period.)

Ok so you like the instruments flowing in. I suggest reacting to TOOL. You want sound? Something different? Something that will blow your mind? React to a TOOL song. Preferably an audio track because there are some horrible cell phone live videos. I don't know if you are ready for TOOL but I am suggesting The Patient as a first listen. BTW I subscribed to your channel because of Hall and Oats.
