When any other tell me about how good the Junglas is I wouldn’t have believed them so much, but from you I totally believe. I know how much you put that Junglas through it’s paces, including the Junglas 2. I have a Junglas but I hardly ever use it as I am more a traditional parang guy, not because I disliked the Junglas. I am very confident that the Junglas can do the job because Esee made it, and also because I know what you put yours through.

A longer, and sometimes heavier knife or machete will brutally outperform the junglas, but when you need something small and lighter the big J is just so versatile! You are on the money bud!

Jacob as always your review is spot on. I know ESEE does not need a spokes person but you would be one to consider. Your time and dedication to reviewing a product is truly a reflection on quality over quantity. I have to say that you single handedly debunked fantasy and trickery in the knife world and placed me on a path of knife understanding. You Intro to knife video series is still one of if not the best intro to knives I have ever seen. You made understanding blade geometry, sharpening, maintenance and use, understandable in a useful and easily understood way. Had I had that information sooner I would not have made a couple poor and expensive knife buying purchases. Please continue to do what you are doing. Know that your legacy will live on through my son because as he gets older not only will I teach him what you have taught me but he will watch these useful videos. lol side note my wife who tolerates my bushcrafty/ outdoorsy side but is not totally into it(yet lol) said that my junglas needs to have as she called it "a finger thing like my LS" she was talking about the finger choil. I thought it was funny and you mentioned that the Junglas needed one as well. Well like you I too can be long winded but that is only because I am too lazy to stop. Good luck to you. It was great to hear about your experience with this knife. I am a retired Carpenter who switched from processed wood to natural wood kind of like my diet. There are two types of Carpenters. One guy uses one hammer for everything and another guy like myself has to have a different hammer for every single nail on the market, ha. 22+ hammers. And it's the same thing with my knives. I recently purchased two Esee knives, the Junglas and the 6. but I will not use them for multi-purposes. The big guy is for big stuff and the small one is for small stuff. I prefer the knife without the changes that you would like to make. That's why I bought the smaller version number six and all my fire steels have a striker attached to them. 40 years doing woodworking, never broke a tool, except for all the ones that I loaned out, only one wore out. If you use your tools properly you will not break them. After I retired I sold half of my equipment and every single piece was working perfectly nothing broken. The Junglas 2 for me is too in-between.

The junglas 2 is in very very in between. And yes, if you take care of your tools they take care of you. Sometimes knives and guns find themselves in situations where you dont get to take care of them- something that i am guessing most carpentry tools dont have to worry about.

I do! The RTAK II is one of my favorite knives, but with the fit and finish, handle scales, quality, and sheath on the Junglas i think its the better value.

Hi, I'm often out in the woods in French Guyana, here we have an equatorial humid climate, with 98% of primary forest (Amazonian), rest is beaches and secondary forest. (More dense and low than primary forest, because it has been cut and have regrow). Usualy i use a machette, and in secondary forest it's the best tool to carry because of the density, but in the primary rainforest, it's not so good, trees are so high, and the canopy is so thick that almost no sunlight comes to the ground, and small vegetation is not as dense as in a secondary forest. A machette is too flexible and soft to process hard wood, and in this very humid environment you have to split wood to access dry wood if you want to start a fire. That's why i just got a Junglas few days ago, i think it might be almost perfect for my needs, an hybrid between a camp knife and a machette. Plus, i own an ESEE6, i've used and abused it for 8 years and it's my favorite knife, ESEE doesnt stands behind with it's lifetime guarantee for no reason. Here you want a tool that you can absolutely trust, because if you get lost or if you have any kind of problem in the jungle and you break your blade.... Things can become miserable. I will come back here to report how i feel about the Junglas after a real use out there, if someone is interested to have a "jungle" based opinion on this beast. It is not currently being made but I do like it- however anything that okc used to make I question their heat treat and quality and consistency. I hope going forward, and expect going forward, that that will improve.

Esee can take pride in the quality of their blades simply because of the outstanding heat treatment and the fact that 1095 is an exceptionally tough steel that is really easy to maintain a record sharp edge.

I wish i lived close by id let ya try out my busse 20th anniversary straight handled battle mistress. Its very similar to junglas, only its quite a bit heavier and has a choil. If it were 3/16ths i think it would likely be one of your favorites if you're into the junglas.

The handle and scales could be redesigned slightly to negate the need of a choil. As it is, fine carving seems a bit difficult due to the distance between index finger and blade root. The size of the knife always put me off, but if the balance is there, size is not hindering effective usage.

I think even with a different handle design i would still like a choil because my hand naturally wants a sub hilt. But it isnt an awkward for fine work as you might think, its pretty g2g!

@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors i am put off by choils on small or up to 7 inch blades. The handguard should protect you enough, even when integral like here. Why grasp beyond it ? It is like forward slide serrations. Why get nearer that muzzle ? On very big knives, a choil is changing the balance point and there I see its value. It is almost a religious thing somehow.

Do you know if they will upgrade the scales on this like they did with other models to make them more round? Seem a bit blocky as they are now. Also, a 90 can be put on the spine in 5min with any basic file

A 90 can be put on with a file, i agree, thats what i did to my J2- but it doesnt look good. As far as 3d scales, idk, but in my experience the Junglas scales arent blocky at all, they are well rounded and quite good.

The 3D scales are the best thing ESEE has done lately. It's a night and day difference. The old scales were a huge annoyance when carving wood. Sharp angles on a handle are not ergonomical.

But it makes sense why it's so cheap for an esee product. Anyways, I got the Fox Maccio II for my dad instead. He doesn't maintain his blade so I think the stainless steel blade will be nice for corrosion resistance.

I initially bought mine for sticky situations while out with my buddies trail riding/mudding. Every time there was a tree in the way, they would all fight about who's turn it was to use it. I'll never get rid of mine. Or my modded esee3. Great, no bullshit tools with which I have great memories.

Thank you for the review! Been considering a larger knife/chopper and still deciding between the Junglas and Junglas 2. Seems they're pretty comparable, but leaning toward and thinking I'd probably rather have the extra two inches in blade length vs. not having it and given I also carry a smaller 3-4" knife, too. I appreciate your reviews on both knives and your no-nonsense, no-b.s. approach. There are many excellent knives out there and I've always appreciated ESEE's no-gimmick approach to knife design. In addition, I appreciate youtubers/reviewers who don't rave about and focus their reviews based on gimmicks, but rather on actual functionality and field experience. Keep up the good work!

If your looking for a Jack or all trades knife you should review the Sheffield MoD British Army Shrvival knife. It’s a TANK! It dose everything you need however doesn’t excel at any one thing. 1/4in thick 7in long blade, wood or black fiber handle. I’ve got one it’s great! Love your videos man keep it up!

Jacob, I bought my Junglas after watching your review. It is my #1 go to blade. I have quite a knife collection . My most recent purchase is a Tops Steel Eagle. I carry it for self defence at my work. I cover it with my work vest and if I need it it's there ready to go. My Junglas is a little long for that but when I head to the woods that's the blade I'll put my life on.

@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors Well I don't have a junglas 2 but I do have the Junglas. The Steel Eagle is a chunk of steel all right. Heavy and a great all around chore knife and as chunky as it is I can't imagine breaking it. LOL. I do have a little issue with the handle where the first finger wraps around that protruding finger grab is a little uncomfortable. But I can work around it. It's not the chopper the Junglas is of course. I carry it for self defence and If I have to open someone or thing like a tube of salami the Steel Eagle will have no trouble. I love my ESSE 6 and the Junglas and if I had to bug out or what ever those two would be my go too blades. I much prefer the ESSE handles. Love your work Jacob you do good.

I love the junglas. LOVE it. But I would like to see a super tough stainless version with a choil and 90° spine. 1095 is ok but so dated. There are stainless steels that are better in every way now. Esee needs to get with the times and they would profit immensely. If they're so focused on jungle survival, modern stainless just makes way more sense. That said, still love it and your video of trying to kill it basically cemented my choice to buy it lol 1095 may be dated and will rust, but damn... you can't say it's not tough when properly heat treated

Ok, so i super agree with you but i want to add a little extra. 1095 is touted to everyone as an ideal production steel for obvious reasons- the market depends on the steel and it benefits every manufacture that uses it to maintain that reputation. Marketing- its a hell of a drug. With that being said- i heard people talking about wanting a stainless production chopper FOREVER- and there have been a few out there. But the truth is most production companies, even Esee, dont rely on enthusiasts for sales- they rely on word of mouth from enthusiants- but not necessarily the enthusiasts $ themselves. They are a TINY segment of the market. They rely on sales to non knife people who will mostly only ever hear the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to word of mouth or EVEN marketing. They keep vastly over simplified opinions like "stainless is weaker- stainless is brittle" Because of that although i think a Junglas or J2 is 420hc, 440b, aebl, lc200, 14c28n, etc- would be FANTASTIC- I simultaneously dont think they would sell. They would likely be a massive failure and would lose the company $. BIG manufactures have to walk SUCH a careful line- and i think Esee is doing a FANTASTIC job. The cracks that they cant fill leave space in the market for little brands- like mine! So its kind of a win win.

@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors I see what you're getting at and obviously esee is very invested in 1095 and THANKFULLY they do it better than pretty much anyone else so I'm not disappointed per say. However if they put out a small run of very tough stainless big knives and send them to you and joe x and other hard use guys and they held up well, I really think they'd sell out quickly. I like how spyderco does sprint runs and wish others would too but I totally understand how cost prohibitive that can be and generally it's better to stick with one or two things that you can really do well with and keep the steady money flowing than to branch out and potentially lose money especially nowadays. But man a junglas that didnt need a coating and wouldn't rust would be awesome hahaha Thanks for the great vids and the solid reply btw. Dig the channel

I may be the minority on this, but if Esee put a choil on the Junglas, I wouldn’t even own one, no matter how great the blade is. I absolutely despise a choil on a knife. That’s why I don’t own the esee 6. I can handle one on a small knife like the 3, which is one of my favorite Esee knives, but I still prefer it without one. However, on a large blade I feel that a choil completely ruins the balanced feel of the blade. It moves the cutting edge further away from your hand during regular use. You can do fine work with a large blade, but that isn’t what it is designed for. So, other than the few times when you are choking up on the blade to perform tasks more suited for a smaller knife, the cutting edge is going to be an inch or so further away from your hand, ruining the balance and ergonomics of the blade. So I say lose the choil and carry a second, smaller blade that is meant and designed for doing fine detailed work; they make them light enough that you barely notice you are carrying one. Just my opinion

The Tops Kukri 7 is trash and i never said anything different. I do love the simplicity and lack of gimmicks on the Esee. And ths gunslinger is simple and lacking in gimmicks, however the fuller does add a touch of flare, but is there because i wanted a lighter and quicker black. You see contradictions either because of your own bias or because you didnt understand the message. 👍🏻

I ONLY use knives with a prominent finger guard and in my opinion, the blade should always start as close to the handle as possible. In this knife, the blade already starts pretty close to the handle. In order to make a functional finger choil (tops armageddon is what I would consider a functional finger choil), one would have to start the blade a good bit further out. There really isn't the real-estate for a functional choil with the way the blade is currently; Most of the choils I see on blades are more fashion statements than anything. I understand the purpose of the finger choil on a large knife like this (absolutely non-sensical on a blade under 8 inches, I would say), but still, I am not a fan of bringing my finger that close to the blade. I’ve never felt a need to either -Even when using my Kershaw camp 10, which has similar dimensions and weight to this knife. I can sharpen a pencil with that thing without even thinking about it. Finger choils are good if you like to use them, but they essentially render the knife handicapped if you DON’T like to use them, which can make for a more dangerous and unwieldy knife.

I would say rather than make a choil on this knife bring the cutting edge closer to the top of the handle. Still though, it's pretty close already. Wish I had one!

So you dont like getting your finger close to the edge- thats fine. And i do agree that the knife COULD have the edge come back further, it would only make sense. But it doesnt. And since it doesnt, i dont see how you can so vehemently complain about a choil- when the space isnt being utilized anyways.

@@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors I'm saying that the space that "isn't being utilized" isn't big enough for a functional choil. For a functional choil to be put on this knife, the cutting edge of the knife would have to start at least a half inch further out. I've heard that most knives have this little bit of space between the handle and where the blade begins because of the way that some of these companies' grinders work (saw Ethan Becker talking about it in an interview. He's was wanting to design a knife where the blade edge came all the way to the top of the handle, but the company couldn't figure out a way to do it on their grinders) I'm assuming that they can't take the grind down that far because they would essentially grind into whatever vice or whatever is holding the knife... Choils are only good for people who want to use them. Otherwise, they render the blade dangerous for those who don't because you can't get up close for detailed work and you then miss that control. See what I'm saying? I would be down for a choiled and a non-choiled version -That way everyones' happy! And although I would rather the blade started immediately where it comes out of the handle, I wouldn't say that space "isn't being used". It does act as sort of a "brace" or a "backstop" to whatever you're cutting, much like the way that they top of the handle would act, but I suppose that's somewhat beside the point here.

I took the black coating off mine and ground a clip point on it so it will stab better i hog hunt with it also had a lether sheath made for it i love it had it for over 10 years now
