Discovering the Hallberg Rassy 50 and what it's like to experience blue water cruising in comfort and style. Complete tour of this fantastic 50ft Hallberg Rassy, and we were lucky to have a chat and interview With Mr Rassy himself.

Of all the boats we looked at during Cannes, the Hallberg Rassy was by far and above the best showing. You can tell that both Mr. and Mrs. Rassy, who were actively engaging visitors, were intimately involved in the construction of their boats. They were so interesting to talk to and knowledgeable, that you know they are the type of people who stand behind what they sell. The layout of the HR50 was smart and functional throughout, and the quality was top-notch. I cannot rave enough about the quality of the build - particularly the cabinetry. As someone who does woodwork as a hobby, you can tell they put considerable effort into their interior fit out. Little things like how complex angles and compound curves match up seamlessly, and the hardware is solid and high quality. I was impressed with Amel, but Rassy is an order-of-magnitude in quality above even them. I was really saddened by the low quality wood edge banding some manufacturers used, or worse, heat-glued adhesive edge banding - a $1.5M price range yacht deserves better. Hallberg Rassy delivers better though and it really made my wife and I wondering how committed we are to getting an aluminum-hulled boat - because we LOVED the Hallberg Rassy 50!

You know replying to this comment is a pleasure. You have made my job easy, and when I write the article for Yachting-Insider, I might get you to do it. As you so rightly pointed out, the Passion shines through With the HR Team, and I can't thank Mr. Rassy enough for the time he spent with us. His intermate knowledge of all their sailboats is incredible.

I'm old school. Back in the day a true blue water sail boat had a full keel and a skeg hung rudder. Not sure when but I think it was mid 80's and I believe it was Beneteau that came up with the idea of a cruiser/racing sailboat hybrid. Now just about every manufacture has gone that route. In recent history the Amel 54, Hallberg Rassy 64, and Island Packet were the last ones standing in the market that were true blue water cruisers. Island Packet still makes a full keel boat with skeg hung rudder. Kraken yachts are new kids on the dock and they are making true blue water sail boats now. Granted the new breed of sailboats look sharp, sail fast, and have a cockpit set up for on the hook parties. To me those are great boats for coastal sailing, cruising around the Med, and making trips to the Bahamas from the United States. I would not want to cross an ocean in one of these new "blue water" sailboats. Hitting a whale or some partially submerged debris with those dinky unprotected rudders has catastrophic failure written all over it when you are a 1000 nautical miles from any land. Granted the odds of that happening are rare and Oyster does an around the world rally every two years with their twin rudder new breed fleet. To my knowledge there hasn't been any incidents on their world rallies. Here in the United States there is a saying "you never need an attorney until you need an attorney". I'd like to rebrand that saying "you never need safety until you need safety". That's my two cents worth of wisdom.

Hi John. In any fibreglass boat, hitting a whale (or being hit by one in retaliation or by mistake) or hitting a container etc will likely result in a cracked hull. The boat will probably sink. It keeps happening. So the answer to concerns about this is an aluminium hull with divided, watertight sections. Or, accept the risk, stick to trade wind routes in the right season and in the knowledge that there will be other boats around to pluck you from your liferaft. 🙂

So since the mid 80s, 40yrs, boats have been sailing around the world just fine 👍 great advertisement for boats without a full keel and skeg rudder in my book

Hi Mate, well what a work of Art this Vessel is, H. R. has made it possible with these magnificent boats for people who actually struggle with either sailing or being on board a monohull. The Safety, comfort and Functionality is of most importance to most people in the Sailing world, So Thankyou H. R. for thinking of all people's needs. Being on a long passage in this Vessel or just cruising would be a dream. Great presentation my friend, when u put ur arm in the locker, I thought u were going to say ' in the closet and I couldn't help lol. Thanks for all the hard work u do bringing these epic craft to us. Hope family is well.🤣🌟🇦🇺🏳️‍🌈

Thank you, me in the closet, no way out and proud all the way, but you can get inside those closets and have a kip while everyone is wondering what happened to you. 😁 It is a fantastic sailboat, and I am glad you understand what an HR boat is all about; many people don't or can't grasp the concept that sailing should be a safe, comfortable and enjoyable sport. Hallberg Rassy does this down to a T, and they should be high up on everyone's list when considering a world-cruising sailboat. We are all well; I just spent time on a Garcia 52, so I am very happy. 🤪Are you and yours well?

If I remember right, 5 blasts is a danger warning that signifies that you think another boater's intentions are incorrect - as opposed to the long single blast for danger on board your own boat.

For me this is the boat I would choose. A superb long distance cruiser. Genuine relaxing yacht for serious cruising. Oozes quality everywhere. Think has everything here that one would choose. Big enough and fast enough with push button sailing. Woodwork is quality personified. Thanks for a great video. Any chance of some rough weather videos putting her through her paces?

If enough people ask, I am sure Hallberg Rassy will let us do a test sail next year. Then, we can see if we can put it through its paces in some challenging seas.

We love the HR 50 and actually went so far as visit the factory in Ellos Sweden and stepped aboard the first few hulls produced. I highly recommend the tour, truly amazing craftsmanship. Stunning boats all built to the highest standard, in the end we choose a different direction (catamaran), but if our next boat were a monohull it would be this one. Maybe when we are done with the tropics one of these will be our future home : )

For a 50ft in their range of blue water sailboats, they are not slugs in the water. They perform well with excellent but sensible speeds for passages. I think it is more about comfort than racing, I would rather participate in a long passage in an HR than a Beneteau 50 as you would be refreshed when coming into port with an HR than the opposite with other production models. 😇

Beautiful boat. However, if i were to be picky, while it is prudent to have dual helms on such a beamy boat, squeezing both of them inside a well defined center cockpit seems to defeat the purpose. Given how centered both are i am not sure how much you improve your view of the headsails by moving to the leward helm. And the passageway to the saloon seems kind of tight. It would be interesting to see it in action... but I'd still go for the Oyster 495 which is THE most push button sail boat I've seen, or the Allure 51.9.

I will do you a deal as I have tested the Allures 51.9 but not the other two as yet. When we get the opportunity to sail the HR 50 and the OY 495, I will do a comparison video for you guys, considering what you and others have asked. Then, we can bash out the ergonomics of the three boats. What do you think?

Nice! -- QUESTION -- I watched your delivery video of the 42E Hallberg and you and the others were sick and throwing up. Are you sure that it was a smooth ride? My question is whether Hallbergs ride "smoother" than a comparable Oyster. We are watching Sailing Florence on youtube with an Oyster 37 which seems large for a 37 and seems to ride smoothly. Which brand would be less likely to make you sea sick?
@SVTONICBoatWives
@SVTONICBoatWives 2 ай бұрын
Both would depending on conditions and if you suffer from sea sickness, their hulls are very similar and do well in big seas. I suffer from sea sickness from time to time and find that if I take care of myself, generally I am fine. I was sick once on that delivery and I new it was going to happen after spending nearly an hour cleaning and fixing stuff in the engine space, it was to much. I will add that I would buy a HR 42e in a flash, they are cracking sailboats. Glad you liked the video

@@SVTONICBoatWives ..excellent. Sorry to pester, but would you take an Oyster 485 or a HR 46 / 48 Mk1 (the 46 and 48mk1 were very similar in length and size to the Oyster 485 I am told). Assuming same conditions and price what would you prefer as a world cruiser for two people spending 5 years?

Deck locker space is huge. There is a big locker between the chain locker and the forward cabin with the capacity for all you ask for: scuba gear, ropes, compressors, folding bikes and a lot more. There are separate further ockers aft and above the chain as well
@davorlencovic9700
@davorlencovic9700 7 ай бұрын
I get that. Thanks. But I still prefer the 'garage in the back' style. Amels, Oysters etc have this. Although huge I would keep my sails, ropes and fenders in the front locker, not keen on putting too much weight there. It's a sail locker first and foremost. It helps with the front sleeping being a tad closer to the centre of the boat but still.. It's a 50 footer, should have more IMHO. Fair winds!
