I don't blame them too much because most of the time they race-swap a character not because it's the best casting but because they are looking to fulfill a political agenda, BUT.... Having said that, I saw half of the movie with Halle as Ariel and I'm sold - her voice alone was reason enough to cast her as Ariel. There are a few minor drawbacks, like cartoon Ariel is more bubbly and fun while Halle's Ariel's manners are all very "guarded", like she moves very slow and keeps her head low, making it look like she's very cautious, but overall they are just minor things, her song scenes were amazing, her singing voice gives me goose bumps. Great casting - I feel like this one was not just about a "race-swap", she is just a good fit, period.

I have seen some adaptations of books where they choose for looks only and destroy the character (sometimes the person can't even act well). I just saw the new little mermaid and I loved her as Ariel. Sure she doesn't have white skin and bright red hair, but her voice is phenomenal (singing wise but her speaking voice is also very soothing) and I loved her acting too. Ariel has been my favorite disney princess when I was little too, and I would pretend to be a mermaid while swimming even though I suck at swimming haha. Her talking about the physical side to training paid off cause her had ABS in the movie and I was so impressed

I saw this movie two days ago and it was good. She was a good Ariel and I’m happy for her that she got to portray the role of her favorite princess. Why everyone nailed it as the roles they were given, especially Javier Bardem as he did in other movies like Skyfall and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales. Not to mention working with actors like Daniel Craig and Johnny Depp.
