Hallelujah - Choir of King's College, Cambridge live performance of Handel's Messiah

The Messiah DVD captures an extraordinary performance in the magnificent setting of the College Chapel. The performance was recorded during this year's Easter at Kings festival and was screened in over 85 cinemas across Europe and North America. It was the first time a choral concert had been broadcast live throughout cinemas.
The critically-acclaimed concert features the Academy of Ancient Music conducted by Stephen Cleobury together with with soloists Ailish Tynan, Alice Coote, Allan Clayton and Matthew Rose, and the King's College Choir. The concert commemorated both the 250th anniversary of the death of George Frideric Handel and the 800th anniversary of the University of Cambridge.

Really excellent all around, and I appreciate the solid performance by the trumpeters. They are producing all notes without the aid of valves, just air support, subtle tongue and embouchure shifts, and a few small holes for perfecting intonation. How wonderful that we live in a time when the almost-vanished art of playing the natural Baroque trumpet has been revived.

The story, possibly apocryphal, is that his man-servant came in and found Handel weeping while he composed the Hallelujah Chorus. Asking Handel what was wrong he is said to have replied that he had seen the gates of Heaven as he was writing the chorus.

I always enjoy watching British choirs because the singers really sing enthusiastically but rarely, if ever, show that enthusiasm on their faces. In fact, nothing moves but their mouths. Meanwhile, the choir master (director) is practically dancing. And the man playing the timpani is attacking that drum.

The Handel's Messiah is the most beautiful piece of music that has ever been written and performed in mankind history. This year in December, is the 80th performance of the Messiah at the Sydney Town Hall using the same format as Kings College. And Messiah is always something special to look forward to. Not as austere as Kings College; but the organ is the largest in southern hemisphere and when installed, the world for a little while. Ive sung in the choir for the last 3 years. They need Council permission to play the large pipes because of the strength of the vibrations! For Hallalujah and the Amen all stops are pulled out and its amazing. The 400 strong choir only just makes it over the organ.

I've written about this as a cognitive scientist.
