We take a look at 3 of the most common measuring tools in the machinist's arsenal. Scales, calipers, and Micrometers. In this video we take a look at inside, outside, and depth micrometers and how they're used, adjusted and read. Part 2 of 2

I worked in a factory for 40 years and taught a LOT of people how to read mics. They always would get confused adding the reading up. The easiest way I found was to tell them it was just like counting money. Pennies Nickles and Dimes around the barrel, up to 25 cents. Than Quarters and Dollars up the shaft. Your measurement with the 2 inch mike would be 5 dollars 75 cents up the shaft plus a nickel and a penny. for 581 so with the extra 1 inch would be 1.581.

This has been a great video. In the past it was a bit of a struggle understanding the operation just by reading from a book, but your explanation makes it much easier to understand. Thanks very much for taking the time to make this video.

As I commented on part 1; "Great video. I have been using these types of measuring tools since 1968, but I still benefited from your explanation. I definitely enjoyed it."

I am not a machinist, but I work on antique engines. I have a collection of measuring instruments, and I found your measuring videos very interesting and informative.

Good overview. One thing you did not mention was telescoping gauges. When I started I did not have them. I later found they were a must have. My first measurement tool was a Craftsman Vernier caliper (mid '80s). Read to 0.001". I much later got a lathe and then, as my only measurement tool, used the Verier to bore holes. I kept finding the bore and the shaft were often sloppy. I got a 0-1" mic and still my bores were off (still used the Verier for inside dia.). It took a while, but I finally found the inside jaws on the caliper were different than the outside by 0.004". So it always read small. I picked up a cheapie digital caliper and no more problems. Later I got some telescoping gauges (snap gauges). That was a game changer. Then I could measure a shaft and bore a hole to the exact same size. This was because i was using the same caliper or micrometer to measure both the shaft and the bore. Now, the accuracy of the measurement tool was not an issue; just that it read consistently. Great vid as always ;)

Thanks! The telescoping gauges will be part of another video on internal threading probably.

these videos are great. would you be able to show how you would measure and set up a measurement on a lathe and mill with the knobs and the appropriate measuring tools .I know that's a lot.

Your videos are great and super informative. Been meaning to ask have you ever had the chance to use a monarch 10ee lathe? I always thought those were works of art

I have never got to use one, but I have seen one in a shop. From what I hear especially with the older ones is that if anything goes wrong electrically with the drive system it's big money to fix.

Great pair of videos which has increased my understanding greatly with these instruments. Question: Everything in Europe at least is steadily moving towards metric measurement that is not already there yet. However I note that apart from the digital instruments you demonstrated is Imperial. Is the reading of metric mechanical instruments basically similar but measured in millimetres or fractions thereof?

Yes

Yup. The dial on the caliper reads between the stationary lines on the bar and a micrometer is read thesame just the divisions are different.

I've learned so far how to read and use the micrometers venier calipers and calipers. However the one tool I'm confused on using and understanding is the three point internal micrometer that is a Division 1, .0002 resolution. It's the one that measures the inside diameter of a circle. If you have a video that explains how to use it or know where I can figure it out then that would be great. Preferably the old kind and the digital kind would be appreciated. Thanks.
