Hey, thanks. I just replaced both Motor and housing after avoiding it for eight months; after 25 years the housing had cracked. (It only lasted a quarter century - I'm complaining to Hayward!) A two skimmer pool u could borrow the suction from one skimmer and use that suction at the clogged skimmer. Set filter to rec. Let the pump get to full prime by leaving the pool hose end just out of the skimmer hole and when full primed stick it in and suck it out with a little luck it will go down the other skimmer pipe.

This made total sense, but I would caution to check valves first. We had pool work done this week and afterwards we saw that the skimmer wasn't sucking in water. Everything else worked great. I came here to find a solution, but didn't think there was a clog, so I called the gentleman who did my work and asked if it could be a valve. Sure enough, my valve was set 100% to the leaf trapper instead of in the middle between the trapper and skimmer.

EXCELLENT 1. Blow hose water FROM pump to skimmer (other people's video have you blowing from skimmer which just reinforces the blockage) 2. Crimp hose off and on to get a pulsing action (great suggestion) 3. If still blocked, use the pump to pump water INTO the pump's suction line (much more powerful than a hose, and yes, you will need to cut your pipes and get a length of flexible pool pipe). A lot better than digging up your yard to get down to underground pipes and locate/cut out blocked section 4. Great practical advice

I unclog skimmers for a living. I always have a small bright colored piece of cloth or tape I first try to force through the pipe. If it travels freely then there is no clog. sometimes it acts as a plunger against porous pine needles. I always use air from a 20 gallon air compressor, I blast it slow at first then I work it up to full blast. To add the air in the line, I tap the pipe with a 7/16" drill and a 1/4" -18 npt thread - this fits the threads of most air connects.

Had no idea you weren't supposed to connect the vacuum hose directly to the skimmer... I asked several people and none of them mentioned that, but it always struck me as odd- why would you want all the leaves and debris getting *in* to your system? Kinda defeats the point of a skimmer basket if you're just going to vacuum crap directly into it lol I'll try this method to de-clog and report back, thanks for the info.

Well being the Maintenance Director of all things home. I listened to your video and tried as many of things you suggested. Found out we didn't have either a skimmer or drain shut off. Well then let's just see if we can push the discharge out the skimmer feed with your towel method. Well one 10 gallon pail full of sand later I quit altogether and got a shut off for the drain side. I then pushed the hose and squeezed it for two days to get all the rest of the sand out of the skimmer and lines and still nothing. No suction. Sitting literally pis....d on the chair I had in the pump house I reached down and touched the chlorine dispenser we never use and low and behold it was loose and shouldn't have been. Took it apart added pucks and regained full pressure. How it got lose I can't figure out. It will be the first thing I check the next time if ever we have a loss of pressure.

I have a question about the main drain, for a couple seasons now if I switcn the valve to draw from only the main drain or even to draw from both the skimmer and the main drain, the pump loses suction, then it will build back up, then lose it again, I normally just leave it on the skimmer because of this, could there be something blocking the main drain? Should I try your method to clear it?

Our swimming pool has a solid custom cover and it gets closed after we use it, it was vacuum yesterday because there was some diatomaceous earth on the bottom by the skimmer, today I noticedt the deck skimmer didn't suction the chlorine treatment, could it clog even when there's no debris going on either skimmer? You would turn off your drain and the skimmer that is working. Leave the skimmer in question open so you can run the water through and unclog. By closing the other lines you will be able to put all the pressure on the skimmer that is clogged. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Also, one more thing, a recommendation for a good skimmer sock. I’ve have good ones that can be backflushed and cleaned. The ones I got this time are not good since they plug quickly and suck the float down and then it can’t skim! The mesh is Too fine. HELP! Thanks!

I believe that what you are referring to is a filter saver which is used on your skimmer basket. This does work well but you will have to clean on a regular basis, if not it will get clogged and restrict flow. Thanks for watching.

The skimmer that is closer toy equipment has much worse suction, so I suspect a partial clog. I bought a bladder but I realized I have the soft PVC pipe for my lines so I didn't end up using it. Would you suggest I go with your method rather than the bladder? Afraid it builds too much pressure. Not sure if it really creates more pressure than this hose/rag method

Could it be clogged even after I felt a decent water pressure out of the skimmer hole, I constantly have low suction. My drain valve is frozen. I'm not sure if it's open or closed, I jump in the pool to test drain suction, but the water is too cold.

Turn off your pool, leave one valve open and one valve closed, if you can run water through the line easily with no back pressure then that would be the drain line. If you switch the valves and you can’t run water through the line easily that line might be your skimmer line. Have someone check the skimmer when you do this, if they see little or no flow at the skimmer then you know that the skimmer is clogged. Thank you for the video. QUESTION? My pump will not prime from the skimmer side. We thought we had a leak but it was pressure tested and held pressure. It appears we have have a possible clog. However, we hooked up our shop vac from the pump side and blew air through the line and it blew through to the skimmer end. So it appeared to not be clogged but yet the pump will still won’t prime. We know it’s not the pump because we have hooked up and above ground temporary line and it works fine. We will still try your method with the hose but still stumped the airflow we get at the skimmer end if we do indeed have a clog. Any thoughts ?

We ended up hooking up a hose from the waste to the skimmer line to use the pump to try and push the debris back out the skimmer box. We did this numerous times alternating back to hooking the pump back up to try and loosen the blockage up. As we were doing this we could see improvement in the pump suction. The end result is the pump is working again and we’ll, but… no evidence of the blockage ever surfaced. We got minimal flecks of leaves and debris out here and there and that’s it. We are pleased the pump is working again, but unsettled with the outcome. Any thoughts or suggestions?

We used a drain bladder to unclog the skimmer. Now the clog is still there and the bladder is stuck in the pipe. The hose is still connected to the bladder. I am not able to pull it out. What should I do?

Oh boy - ok here's my issue In Ground Pool , It was installed back in the late 80's, I'm not getting any suction on my bottom drain , The skimmer has 2 ports in the bottom. (1) I know goes to the inlet of the pump , an the second port I'm guessing goes to the drain in bottom of pool. There's a pvc cover over the 2 ports in the bottom of the skimmer , Inside this pvc cover is a Butterfly Valve ( like a carburetor on a car ) an it has a lil T handle sticking out the side of it , I guess that would be to allow more suction on the main drain in bottom - or more suction at Skimmer to pump / or sorta split the difference to draw water from both . I tried running a plumber snake down to the main drain an yes I pulled up a bunch of stuff , so now I'm getting a lil bit of suction thru the main drain at bottom but obviously not enough . I took a plastic frisbee an pushed it down over top of the bottom drain an the pump suction just barely keeps the frisbee over top of the drain I can easily push it off with the pool pole . Any suggestions on how I could possibly increase the suction from the main drain to the pump inlet ( I have only 1 pipe coming up outta the ground going into pump inlet ) On the Filter outlet side I have pipes going into the ground with a gantry valve in between them that has 3 positions on it , if I turn the handle on the gantry Valve in one direction it operates a water feature at the low end of the pool running 3 jets that shoot water an air bubbles ( I know just enough about this thing to get myself in trouble lol ) , Thank You

The water level should be little under the top of the skimmer so that debris will go into the skimmer. If the water level is above the skimmer, debris will not be able to go into the skimmer. Thanks for watching.

The water level should be about halfway up the skimmer opening. Lower than that and the skimmer may run dry and your pump will suck air and cavitate. Much higher than that and your water will go over the tile line and touch the coping. The mortor under the coping is not designed to be under water and over time that mortor will weaken and your coping will detach from the pool.

SO... I tried this, sort of, but instead of going from the pump end I put the hose in the skimmer hole, and did it, then using the skimmer line lever to create pressure and purge. It's easier to build up pressure, release it, build up pressure, release it, etc. Then it's also going in the right direction through the pump, cutting down on chance of reclogging it when the skimmer is freed. EDIT: THOUGH I did use your video to show me what the theory was. Since before 12hrs ago, hadn't any clue.

Sometimes that works for sure, we've also used the blowers used to winterize pool pipes to clear the line as well. Doesn't build enough pressure to burst a pipe and for some reason the air and all the agitation seems to get out stuff like acorns, etc. We use a fitted lid and like you did the pinch the hose method we often pulse the valve on and off to get bursts of pressure.

Great video. We are having leaves and pine straw falling by the bucket fulls with more than usual wind and our skimmer basket was full and the pump sucking air. First made sure there was no debris blocking the skimmer door and then tried your hose technique with no luck. Suddenly, it occurred to my husband to check the trap door. The door was stuck so no water was coming into the skimmer. Duh! But glad it turned out to be a VERY easy fix.

This worked. My particular clog was two parts. We got it to move by using this trick as shown, and backing that up by using a plunger on the hole to exert pulling force on the pool side of the clog.

Would undulating suction indicate a clog? It cycles every few seconds. Sucks decent for 4-5 seconds then slows down and does this repeatedly. We concerned about a clog but are suspicions of a leak. I've checked all the connections for air leaks and everything above ground seems fine.

It’s possible you have a clog, run the pump on the drain line and close the skimmer. If the pump runs good on the drain then you may have a clogged skimmer. If the pump doesn’t run good on the drain then you may have a clogged pump. Thanks for watching.
