In this video, Stefan's mother has a heart attack. He calls the emergency services and she is taken to the hospital by ambulance. Stefan's girlfriend Anna drives him to the hospital. But they are stopped by the police because she was driving too fast. Ruth is operated on in the hospital. Will she get better? Watch our story and learn important vocabulary and phrases by listening and repeating it. You can easily learn vocabulary, syntax and grammar. You will practice the following grammatical topics in this video:
imperative
The imperative form in German is used to express commands, instructions or requests. It is often used without an explicit subject. The form of the verb changes depending on whether it is you, her or they.
"Do not leave me alone."
"Please take a seat in the waiting room."
"Get ready."
Separable verbs
are verbs where a prefix can be separated. When conjugating in different tenses or modes, the prefix is separated from the verb and placed at the end of the sentence.
"I'll pick you up immediately."
“Get in quickly!”
"Elevate your legs."
modal verbs
are special verbs in German that are often used to express the modality, possibility, necessity, permission or ability of an action. These verbs are often used with an infinitive of the main verb, which remains unchanged and appears at the end of the sentence.
"Maybe she needs surgery."
"I have to call the emergency room."
"Can you hear me?"
Past tense (auxiliary verbs and modal verbs)
The past tense is a tense in German that is mainly used in written language, while the perfect tense is often preferred in spoken German. It is also called “narrative time” and is used to report completed actions in the past. The conjugation in the past tense changes depending on the person and the verb stem. There are irregular verbs whose past tense forms are not formed according to a fixed pattern and therefore have to be memorized.
"We had to operate on her grandmother."
"She had a heart attack."
"Her heart wasn't right."
Sentence position subordinate clauses
The construction in which connectors are followed by the verb at the end of the sentence is quite common in German and gives the sentence a certain structure. Connectors are used to express different types of relationships between sentences or parts of a sentence.
"Thank you for coming so quickly."
"We're taking her to the hospital to check her out."
"The doctor will come to you when the operation is finished."
