Change prepositions: Where or where to?
There are many prepositions in the German language. A preposition always comes at the beginning of an object in a sentence and gives the object its case. With most prepositions, it is very clear which case I have to use with them: bei, mit, zu, aus, for example, I always use the dative case, durch, für, um, gegen always use the accusative case.
However, this works differently with alternating prepositions.
In this German lesson, you will learn the difference between the accusative and dative case. Verbs of movement are followed by the accusative case after an alternating preposition. State verbs are followed by the dative case after an alternating preposition. In German, there are nine alternating prepositions that alternate between the dative and the accusative: an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen. Example: I am going to the German course (acc.). I am in the German course (Dat.).
If I can ask "wohin?", I ask for a direction / action and use the accusative. If I can ask "wo?", I ask for a position and use the dative.
