Learned something new - In Ireland and Scotland people carved scary faces into turnips and placing them into windows or near doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits. This tradition carried on when they moved to the US.

Great video instruction. My favorite part of carving the pumpkin is the pumpkin seeds. I remove all the stringy parts from the seeds but don’t wash the seeds. Give them a good coating of salt and roast in the oven at 300*F for about 10-15 minutes (or until golden brown) stir halfway through. But, watch closely so they won’t burn.

What a clever project! Since pumpkins aren't native to Ireland, the first jack o'lanterns were actually carved turnips or rutabagas!

give your future Jack-o Lantern a bath before carving it. Then etch before carving and carve before scooping it. Scoop it from the back and not from the top. Leave the stem attached. To keep it longer seal it with Vasoline. If it is looking a bit droopy or sad, toss it in an ice water bath for an hour. Jack-o Lanterns do best between 50 & 55 degrees Fahrenheit. I learned a whole bunch of new things today. 🎃

It was the Irish that brought the tradition of carving Jack-o-lantern to America. But it was not a pumpkin at this. They used turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes, and beets.

Irish legend has it that this use of jack-o'-lantern was named after a fellow named Stingy Jack. Stingy Jack thought he had tricked the devil, but the devil had the last laugh, condemning Jack to an eternity of wandering the planet with only an ember of hellfire for light.

A jack-o'-lantern (or jack o'lantern) is a carved lantern, most commonly made from a pumpkin or a root vegetable such as a rutabaga or turnip. Jack-o'-lanterns are associated with the Halloween holiday. Its name comes from the reported phenomenon of strange lights flickering over peat bogs, called will-o'-the-wisps or jack-o'-lanterns. The name is also tied to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a drunkard who bargains with Satan and is doomed to roam the Earth with only a hollowed turnip to light his way.

Copied from Google - The Devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his word not to claim his soul, would not allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack off into the dark night with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth with it ever since 🎃
