I have a soft spot for cryptozoology as it used to be a lot more valid, animals like the platypus and the colossal squid are perfect examples of animals that where thought to be myths until they where accepted by the wider community

The platypus, komodo dragons, giant squids, and gorillas were cryptids once too. There are giant salamanders of Japan that reach 5 feet in length, one cryptid that would be fun to explore is the supposedly similar cryptid giant salamander of similar size in the mountains of California! Haha

I believe the Gryphin was concocted at first, perhaps in part inspired by actual animals present in the area where it was said to exist, but was later attributed to the fossils as evidence.

I'm a relatively new subscriber that's been slowly making my way through your back catalogue. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover this video and greatly enjoyed it. Next entry I hope you do aquatic sirens/mermaids as those are a fun thought exercise and I once did a comic series attempting a scientifically and historically accurate take on them.

One thing I reckon you could cover for next Halloween is Australian late-surviving mega-fauna type cryptids. I've been researching Alien Big Cats (ABCs) in Australia, and one thing I often hear is that the big cat sightings could possibly be because Thylacoleo is still alive, so that could make for an interesting video.

The lochness monster could be a Pinniped or semi aquatic Rodent, Talpid, Shrew or an otter species the evolved convergently as to me thats a pretty likely option as we do see mammals with similar body plans to extinct reptiles like Dolphins, Giraffes and even beavers and platypus with a similar body plan to the extinct mammal Castorocauda besides of course the beak of the platypus tho another species a relative infact of the platypus has a striking resemblence to Sterepodon and so to me this is the most likely answer for this animal as a mammal would be better at adapting to the climate of modern scotland an survive the freezing temperaturs of the winter months in the pleistocene. Edit: I believe that mokelembembe could be a semi aquatic giraffe or it could be a new mammal species that convergently evolved an elephant like body and a crocodile like head given how unexplored the congo is however who knows tho it would have been found as a body in the illegal bush meat trade by now as even elephants arent safe from the bush meat trade.

In all honesty, I wondered why are bloodsucking kangaroos such a common archetype among cryptids, with chupacabra being the most famous example, and the same goes for screaming demonic kangaroos, of which the Jersey devil is the best known, plus one question stuck to me the most is why are so many kangaroo cryptids depicted with bat wings. But it all clicked to me. Since chupacabra is also depicted as a dog with bat features, it could be because the Aztecs and the Mayans viewed dogs and bats as deities of Underworld, since they feared them for a simple reason: rabies. Rabies was common and was lethal in Ancient Mesoamerica, and it makes sense that dogs and bats would be feared by them; dogs were vectors and bats were reservoire of rabies, thus they started to asocciate them with death and disease. The kangaroo description of chupacabra may come from seeing a mangy dog or armadillo in the dark and mistaking it for a kangaroo or maybe it was an opossum which convergently evolved to resemble a kangaroo and is also a large bodied predator. Also, also, since the Jersey devil also has a head of a horse, horns and hind hooves of a goat and bat wings, it could be because Algonquin Native Americans have never seen a horse or a goat and thought it was an evil spirit, plus they feared bats because of rabies, since bats are reservoire of rabies, they came to asocciate them with death, disease and evil. On top of all od this, they might have seen an opossum which convergently evolved to resemble a kangaroo and is also a large bodied predator.

I just discovered your channel today. Thank you for putting this video together. I would be interested in your take on the dogman/werewolf. The stories of the Beast of Bray Road and the Palmyra Wolves are interesting and terrifying.

Wasn't there some kind of deer or antelope found in Vietnam "recently" (end of 20th cent.) that the locals had been talking about for ever, but biologists dismissed? A rather large animal to have been missed.....

Same thing with the coelacanth as well. But at the same time, this happens a lot with these animals. Okapi being another example while chimps were/are elusive in areas where people hunt these chimps. Animals are smart and will avoid areas where they are at risk of being targeted.
