WOW Jolly Ranchers I loved them as a kid the most underrated candy there is. To me it's one of those that went under the radar everyone loved them but at the same time I don't think many people noticed when they went out and I actually had to Google it after hearing Pat and Ian talking about them because I had totally forgot about them.
@StankMask10 жыл бұрын
Pat, I'm kinda from your area. Do you remember Spree? The packaging was the same size as Sweet Tarts and were fruit flavored cylinders. Beyond what was mentioned in the podcast, we used to get Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, small boxes of Good N Plenty, flavored Tootsie Rolls (Vanilla, Lemon, etc), snack size Fun Dip, individually wrapped flavored rectangular wafers, and Bazookas (different flavors). I also remember wax bottles filled with sugar liquid of different flavors. You would bite the top off and chug it.

Man, as much as I loved all the candy talk, I liked it even better when you got into the actual Trick-or-treating stories. Those really brought back some memories. I loved the part about being 5 neighborhoods over, with a group of older/shady kids you don't even know (wondering if they were going to beat you up and take your candy lol). Also, the way you told the story about knocking at the dark house in the weird part of the neighborhood, man that was perfect.

Candy is defintely my weakness. Mainly the "high end" chocolate candy bars. Snickers, Kit-Kats, Reese's. I could go on and on naming all the specific variations that are my favorites. Anyway, I definitely agree with Pat that fun sizes are much smaller than they used to be. They seriously were close to 1/2 the size of a full candy bar when we were kids, now they're just tiny. I agree with Ian as well, they don't taste the same. I think when they're smaller they don't get the ration of peanut butter to chocolate (or whatever ingredients) exactly right. The houses that handed out full size candy bars were always the best, that was the highlight of your trick-or-treating night right there. I took my kids for the first time this past Halloween; 1 house gave them KING SIZE Reese's, another held out a bowl full of all the big name candies and said "we haven't had many trick-or-treaters, take as much as you want". JACKPOT! I always liked the houses that would let you pick your candy, instead of just randomly handing you something. I didn't EXPECT it, it was just a nice bonus when it would happen.

I like most candies, and my favorites are anything with Reese's attached to it: peanut butter cups, Reese's Pieces, Fast Breaks, etc. The problem is that for some reason, Reese's seem to melt more quickly than other chocolates. Maybe it's because of the peanut butter...

Man, anyone remember the bubble gum cigarettes? Rare ass candy, but so cool as a kid, it was like a stick of gum wrapped in a paper, with some sort of powdered sugar in between, so if you were to blow air into the gum, it would have an appearance of smoke. It would be so rare to come across one of those as a kid trick or treating.

The way I always heard it, the "trick" part was a threat on the part of the kid. If they don't give you a treat, the kid is threatening to play a trick on them (not show them a fun trick, but do something like throw pepper in their face, TP the house, or something).

For some reason the area I live did Halloween on the 29th, but we didn't know that. So on Halloween night we took the kids out and there were very few houses giving out candy.
