For those wondering about the origin x.com/martytheelder/status/1826994069190631714?s=46&t=VijnmQG6miELtlXZbnvsEA Also, to be clear, I didn’t expect everyone to figure this out. I always expected that the folks would realize it was a music puzzle and then enlist the help of music experts in the community. It wouldn’t actually be that hard for a composer. Then I fully expected the solution to be shared with everyone. Easy peasy

When i was a kid, my parents hated videogames and i didnt have Xbox LIVE until well into Reach's lifespan. Playing the trilogy and reach solo as a kid, i missed and misunderstood sooooo much, but one thing was easy enough for even a child to understand: the beautiful music! Id sit at the pause main menu and just listen. I think that was the first time in my life that i ever sat down and just appreciated something like that. Then years later as i got connected to the internet and simply grew up, i found out how many secrets and little things in each game there were. In my opinion thats a MAJOR reason why halo is still alive today. The audience grew up with the games and revisted them again and again as they themselves delevoped and understood more. I cant express how important Halo was to me as a kid. My first videogame, my first game to play online with other people, the first game to make me cry. Purchased across several console generations and they just always seemed to get cooler with each release haha. Halo 3 ODST will always be my favorite.

This makes much more sense. Additional unintended symbolism, the final skull in the final game uses the final phrase of the original game in order to take you full circle. The poetry that manifested itself within the studio back in those days of Bungie was beautiful. Same with Marathon. It was done artfully, and with care. Martin. I owe, in part, my career as a musician and composer, to the music you wrote for the halo games. The Steve Vai version of the halo theme, for halo 2, is what first inspired me to learn guitar. But the soundtrack to the original trilogy as a whole has always been very dear to me. Nowadays, I especially love "walk in the woods", "under cover of night" and "one final effort" Since taking up guitar as a teen, music has become most of what I do with myself. I perform, I compose, and I teach. It is how I earn the majority of my income, and it is what brings me the most joy. To this day, I notice little snippets of your harmonic vocabulary in my own. I would have been about 11 when I found all the halo 3 skulls, so it would have been I think 14 years ago now (I couldn't afford a 360 for a while, so I was a bit late to the party) I remember struggling with different guides, each telling me slightly different versions of the ring numbers. Realising now that the solution is musical has brought me close to tears. Thanks Martin. This has made my day. (Also thanks Martin. I love your music)

I remember learning about the skull on some niche forum post rig by after it was discovered, probably the bungie forums. This gave me goose bumps. Holy nostalgia. Hearing you play through the phrases and end it saying "that's the one" Yea. That IS the one for sure lol. That's the one that makes everyone feel a certain way hearing that song start playing. It almost makes us stop what we're doing immediately to hum along lol. Then "duh duh duh DUHHHHHHHH - duh duh duh DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" right after. Timeless. I thank God I was alive to experience FULLY Halo 2 Xbox Live. Routinely staying up for 2-3 days straight, from tea and snacks as fuel, GRINDING those ranks. I met Tony Hawk and Bam Margera at Reunion Arena, in Dallas Tx for the Dew Sports Tour of i forget what year, and there was a booth with Halo 2. My friend and I knew how good we were so we challenged those guys. I'll never forget. We played Lockout, Slayer as usual. They did not kill either of us once. No chance. They ended up letting us stay there at the booth and challenge anyone we wanted. We never even got killed ONCE. I swear on my faith. So they called up this "pro" to come play us. Supposedly he was like rank 4-5 or something, idk. We stomped him so hard, he just went back home shortly after. I don't even remember what that dude looked like lol. We originally intended to just go buy some boards so we could skate some new decks outside. Instead of that or even watching the rest of the Dew Tour, we just played Halo 2 all day at that booth. It just goes to show that my love of skateboarding doesn't compare to my love of gaming. If my Mom never bought my Brother Halo CE for his birthday to try it out, a much less interesting life I would have lived.

No one will probably believe me but I remember solving this by listening back to the cutscene and hearing the notes, seeing "don't shoot but listen" and thinking "okay... notes of 7, could it be.. the last 7? Surely not" then telling my brother to stop and wait as i thought, doing it myself and getting the skull after completing it with elation. I just thought others would pick this up too or had already said something about it. To me it stood out that there was a theme of 7 and the rings being note related. This was such a clever little puzzle to solve and at the time I knew nothing about online forums for the skulls so I didn't even know it'd been leaked anyways.

The explanation from the man himself. Awesome video, thank you! The Bungie era Halos (the canon Halos, fight me) were a thing of beauty. The magic sauce was the team. No amount of money can ever replicate that. It can’t be bought or faked. How much fun it must have been to have been a part of that.

I love this skull so much for the sake of pop culture and memes become more prominent into Halo 3 especially when different Red vs Blue voice actor pairs depending on difficulty show up in that one knocking scene

I just want to say thank you for sharing so much about your work on Halo and your time spent with the franchise and companies. Thank you for being a huge part of making amazing memories for my (and many others) childhood. I pray that maybe one day the stars will align for those who made Halo the franchise that it is, can one day return to make it great one more time.

As a musician, this was so damn cool to watch because I actually understood the majority of it. You're a legend, Marty!

Dude you are the man behind so many of our childhoods, at the end of my day when I was alone id go into my little garage side room and turn on my Xbox 360 with halo 3 loaded up and just sit at the main menu sometimes. Thank you so much I can tell the love that went into that game

A different time. A time when developers really loved making these games. The reason that people fell in love with halo, the chief, the music, and the story is because of the love that was poured into its creation from people like you, Marty. I'll forever be grateful for the adventure you and the team took us on.

It has been almost 17 years since we got the masterpiece that is Halo 3 on Sept 25. Thank you for your timeless music. The impact you have made on the life’s of those who had the honor to play Halo cannot be underestimated. Thank you Marty. It took a hacker to solve a great musical puzzle. Were it so easy.

Halo 3 is my favorite game ever. It's surreal getting "new" Halo 3 content, from Marty, decades later. I'm thankful. Thank you for the memories, and for making them sing.

That is brilliant. I am very grateful you shared this. Halo CE, 2 and 3 are already my favorite games to exist. This just shows how much you all cared. Thanks for explaining it, my entire family grew up loving music and your compositions drove me and my two brothers into music. Thank you
