A better term for use would be prejudice, not racist. Race is obviously focusing towards your racial heritage, or features. While "American" is a nationality, not necessarily a race; which "prejudice" represents much more accurately than "racist". But I agree, nobody should ever be that close-minded, judgmental, and with having the naïveté of a 5 year old, I would still expect more.
